The 2022 Capita Black Snowboard of Death Snowboard Review

By Angrysnowboarder @angrysnowboard · On September 28, 2021

Board: Capita BSOD

Size: 156

Camber Option: Alpine V1. Rocker in the nose, camber through the insert pack, flat after the rear insert then a tiny little rocker before the tail upkick.

Bindings: Rome Black Label

Stance: 21.5 Wide 15 Negative 12 Goofy

Boots: K2 Thraxis Size 10

My Weight: 200lbs

Resort: Copper Mountain

Conditions: Overcast skies, cooler temps, high to low visibility, snow falling, fresh snow on top of corduroy, ice, a little chunder, and pockets of knee to mid thigh deep powder.

Flex: Well they stiffened this thing right back up. I mean its a full blown freeride board again with a board way up there on the freeride spectrum. It’s a full directional flex so you do get a slightly softer nose that stiffens up right in front of the front insert and maintains that flex to just outside the rear insert pack. From there it stiffens up a little more. Torsionally there’s some give to it but it’s not mind blowing.

Stability: Do you like going as fast as possible through the most rutted out terrain and not feeling a thing? If you answered yes then good news this board will have you covered. Any chatter in the nose is completely dissipated by the time it gets to the front insert pack. This is a board that’s designed to plow through or climb over anything in its path and not buck you.

Ollies/Pop: The camber section takes a bit to load up and you have to push into this board. Even after all that work you still don’t get the most insane snap that you can imagine, it’s enough to get the job done but not mind blowing.

Butterability: Are you ready for a work out? Good, because that’s what this board is going to give you. Get your weight way out over the nose or tail and you will have to man handle it the whole time. As you do that it’s going to fight you and want to push you out of the press.

Carving: So the nice thing about this board is that it retains the same edge control that last years had. It locks in on edge and just rips a turn. Whether you’re doing a short quick carve or a deep hard one you can really push into this board. The Death Grip does its job when you disengage the front foot and pressure it off the rear.

Rider in Mind: Hard charging freeride guy.

Personal Thoughts: So last year I said it was the best version of the BSOD that Capita had made. I stand by that, I personally liked that version more. Why? Because it was more approachable. Now with this new core you have a more aggressive hard charger and I get why they did it, they added the Mega Merc which in my mind is the equivalent of last years BSOD. Now with all this said is this a bad board? Hell no this is going to resonate more with the hard charging freeride guys that really like to push it to the limit.

Comparable Boards: Jones Ultra Flagship, Ride Berzerker, Nitro Pantera

Recommended Bindings: Union Atlas, Rome Cleaver, Now Drives

What do you recommend for DIY snowboard tuning? Are there any kits better then others or is it all the same shit?

File guide with 1, 1.5, 2, and 3 degree bevel, finishing file, coarse file, scrapper that’s metal preferably two, plastic scraper, scraper sharpener if you do that waxing thing, waxing iron once again if that’s your thing, cork pad, buffing pad, 2 part marine grade epoxy, c clamps, and porn.

    Hey, Whats up brother?

So, i followed your lead a few years ago and i ended up with a Mercery and a branch manger for the past few years ( great boards), but last year I was really swayed by your BSOD review and was trying to find one with no luck.
I got tired of the Mercury, Im 37/38 now, i still charge hard and ride back country, but that board is just eating my knees at this point ( it has very little chill). Id still like to charge, hold nice lines, and be able to make some quick turns in norther vermont trees, but i need a little more dampness in my life… and maybe some occasional sloppy skitch/surf turns. This year im looking into the PYL, flight attendant, and BSOD.
Its seems like you’re much higher on the mega mercury than this years BSOD. I just wanted to pick your brain on that as well as the other boards mentioned.

Might be time to go look at a Mervin board or maybe some Nitro’s.

    Hey Angry!

Could I get away with a 159 and size 12 paws on the BSOD. It’s a 259WW on a 59. Midwest rider mostly or should I go 157W? Not a fan of boards over 160.

    Thanks!

You can get away with that 59.

Get the 56 then if you find the 59 too long.

    Hey Avran,
I’m 6ft 180lbs Boot Size 12. I ride in BC (mostly Whistler). Looking for something fast and powder capable. I don’t ride park but enjoy jumps from time to time. Currently on Mercury 161 (I know I’m pushing it with the width). Got it on sale last year but realized I don’t really need a freestyle-oriented board. Would the new BSOD be a good choice? If so, 157W or 161W?
    Thanks!

It’ll work, but wouldn’t be my first choice.

Arvan, the only difference between this current version and your favorite from last year, is that the forged carbon rods that are in the tip and tails of the deck were moved from being laminated from the top of the core to the underside. That’s it. Not much difference at all from last years, except that there’s a tad more pop out of the rod being on the bottom. Some rocket science shit of how it reacts with compression vs. expansion.

They just ride so differently which is insane. I love what the BSOD is this year because it differentiates itself from Mega Merc and really fits the rider it’s marketed to so much better.

    Hi Avran,

I would kindly ask for tou advise. Currently I am riding Bataleon Goliath, which was and still is great board for laid back riding. However, I really hate bataleon loosing grip on ice. I am looking for more agressive board to bomb groomers and do mild off piste. Torn between superpig and BSOD. Use Union Strata bindings. What would you recommendz

    Thank you

    • Angrysnowboarder says: February 4, 2022 at 3:10 pm

BSOD for sure, but you’ll want a stiffer binding than the Strata.

      • Ed says: February 5, 2022 at 5:23 pm

Thank you for response. Is starta completely no go with BSOD or it would do the job just not as good as stiffer bindings? Most of the time I need to fly to the mountains, therefore need to keep within weight restrictions and would prefer to have one pir of bindings that would go with both Bataleon and BSOD? Is there such bindings that could work on both?

It’ll work but you’ll lose lateral drive for the board which translates to less power through a turn. Why don’t you check out the Rome Cleaver instead.

    Hey angry,
I currently own a nitro dropout 153 and I love that thing. Super fun board. However I’m looking for something more aggressive to bomb some lines. I’m ~165 lbs, do you think I’d be happy with the extra charging capability I’d get from upsizing the dropout? Or should I steer towards an actual full free ride oriented deck? I’ve never ridden the same board in different sizes before so I’m not sure how much that actually changes things

    • Angrysnowboarder says: February 4, 2022 at 3:12 pm

Upsizing would be negligible on that board. Might be time to add something else to the line up.

    Hi,

    Thank you for review.

How would you compare BSOD with K2 Alchemist, what is the advantage of one over the other? Witch one is better in pow?

    Reply
    • Angrysnowboarder says: February 15, 2022 at 9:49 am

They’re about equal in pow. The difference comes down to the construction, flex, sidecut, and camber profile. They sit in the same category but each has its own pros and cons.

Thank you! I will clarify I managed to find last years BSOD. Would there be any difference riding in slow speeds (some friends are just beginners)? Sorry, for asking so much, but would you be able to name pros and cons comparing both? It has been few weeks that I am researching witch board to get lol. I was already set on Alchemist until I found last years BSOD. Also, BSOD is size 156, while K2 I would need 59W (I normally ride 158-160, but k2 160 seem very narrow). My stats 175 and 10.5. Thank you again

Hey Angry, love the reviews! I’m sold on the bsod, but Looking for some advice on sizing.
I’m 5’11” 175-190 lbs advanced 20yrs of riding, us10 boot size. currently ride a 57 slash brainstorm, but looking for something more aggressive to rail turns on groomers and really start laying some deep carves. Love the Brainstorm and works fine but gets a little squirrely and I want a hard charger. Anyway, trying to decide between 159 or 157w. I like to throw the occasional threes here and there and worried the 59 is too long. I know 56 is too short for my liking. What do you think about 57w or would you recommend 59? Thinking the 57w might help with stability and carving too but worried about edge to edge etc. folks seem to really like wides these days.

After 20 years of riding, I’m finally transitioning out of Park Rat life at Brighton and into Steep Chute life at Snowbird.

My Typo gets pretty bucked coming out of chutes at warpspeed into the cut-up groomer chunder below. I’m fine charging when the snow is consistent, but would love more confidence in variable / chundery stuff.

Should I be looking at a BSOD, Mega Merc, or other? I’m looking for something that can handle big feet (11.5) and the inevitable ice patches you find when traversing on windblown ridgelines. I’m also not a huge guy (170lbs at 6’2) if that matters.

BSOD is a good option over the Mega Merc, but I think it’s time to look at a dedicated steep charger. I’d look at the Ride MTN Pig or Berzerker, K2 Alchemist, Jones Flagship or even Ultra Flagship or maybe the Storm Wolf, Nitro Suprateam or Pantera, or maybe something like a Korua Pencil/pencil plus or even a Dart.

Do you think Katanas would pair well with the BSOD? Im looking for 1 pair to straddle both a charger board and a park board i have in the quiver. If i went with something stiffer like say Cleaver, will that really effect my park riding? I dont really jib or jump much, more so butters and side hits as i cruise around

What size would you recommend for a rider of 200-215 lbs, 6’2” and 12 bootsize (K2 Thraxis) that likes speed, carving, powder, natural features and jumps in the park?

    Thank you,

Looking at this or a Ride Berzerker. Which would you recommend? Would like something for hard charging and stability but preferably whichever one has more pop and maneuverability as well. Berzerker seems a little stiffer and freeride focused so I’m leaning towards the BSOD.

Also, I would you recommend Jones Mercury’s over the Now Drives? I know they’re basically the same but other reviews make it seem like this year the Mercury’s finally differentiated themselves.

In your video review of the BSOD you rode the 156. Was that because that was the size you were given or did you choose that size? I’m 6’ 170 lbs with a whole pizza in my stomach and a burrito in my pocket, size 10 boots. Would a 156 be the best size for me or should I go up to a 159?
