The 2021 Gnu Gremlin Snowboard Review

By Angrysnowboarder @angrysnowboard · On January 18, 2021

Board: Gnu Gremlin

Size: 155

Camber Option: C3. Camber 2.0.

Bindings: Rome Black Labels

Stance: 21.5 Wide 15 Negatie 12 Goofy

Boots: K2 Thraxis Size 10

My Weight: 200lbs

Resort: Loveland Ski Area

Conditions: 10 plus inches of fresh snow on top of perfect corduroy. Zero wind, cooler temps, and average visibility.

Flex: This board has a every so slightly above middle of the road flex. It’s your standard directional flex with a softer nose, stiffer middle section and tail. There’s a decent amount of torsional flex.

Stability: This board is nice and stable. You can cut through crud and it doesn’t buck you around. At speed there’s a tiny amount of chatter in the nose.

Ollies/Pop: This board has some serious pop. From the camber profile to the flex and the shape of this board it just wants to launch off anything and boost. It’s easy to engage the camber profile and the rebound is exactly what you want in a board like this.

Butterability: The nose is the optimal place to press on. It’s essentially a giant scoop that doesn’t fight you and just holds a butter. The tail is better for doing wheelies at high speed.

Carving: This board is quick and nimble from edge to edge. You can feel it power into a turn and then lock in on edge while snapping out of a carve. Short tight quick carves or long hard drawn out ones this board does it. This thing is meant for ripping turns and how you flex the board in the camber profile makes this board easily maneuverable.

Rider in Mind: Freeride focused resort rider.

Personal Thoughts: Man this board did not let me down. You have power from the mid of the board back to the tail which is great for ripping a carve or doing a power slash in deep snow. The nose is playful which made pow butters an absolute dream.

Comparable Boards: Telos Backslash, Ride Superpig, Rossignol Sashimi

Hi Angry, what’s the biggest difference between the gremlin vs the orca? I’m guessing the gremlin is more playful?

    • Angrysnowboarder says: January 19, 2021 at 8:10 am

Opposite. Gremlin is more aggressive and has a different camber profile.

hi Angry, i wonder what is the difference between the gremlin and the Korua tranny finder?
I mostly carve on groomer and chase pow, and now can’t decide between the Dancehaul, gremlin, and the tranny finder.
    THank you!

Realistically the big things are going to be shape, camber profile/camber amount, and sidecut.

Just how similar is the Ride Superpig? Everything I’ve read points me towards the Pig, but GNU being Made in USA is a major selling point for me.

It’s similar on edge and purpose but the Gremlin is stiffer, more damp, and has a bit more power out of the camber.

How would you compare the gremlin to the Burton skeleton key? I ride mostly on the east coast and like to carve, hit the trees, and do pow when I can. Have rode the 153 orca and wanted something more turny/carvey. Is the gremlin significantly better for carving up groomers? And since I’m on the ice coast would you go gremlin over SK? Thx

Overall it’s a stiffer and damper ride. It also grips more aggressively from the front foot back.

First of all you’re awesome for taking the time to get back to everyone on here.
I’m in my mid 30s and am an advanced rider that finds myself chasing pow and euro forcing groomers when not cruising with the father in law on some slopes. Mainly been a Burton whore for most of my life and don’t really have any issues in medium snow to pow- riding a skeleton key 158 and a 150 bottom feeder, but am lacking in hard to ice coverage. After a weekend on the ice coast and not being able to cut into hard pack/ ice was debating picking up a gremlin. Tossed around the orca, but figured there is too much overlap with my quiver.
So go gremlin or any other Recs? I dig shorter boards.

Looking for an all mountain one board does it all… I am interested in a volume shifted board, and I currently have a Ride Superpig 148. I enjoyed riding the Superpig, but I didn’t love it, looking for an equivalent or better. I also like to ride switch at high speeds. Mostly riding at Snowbird & occasionally JacksonHole. Interested in your feedback… Did you like riding Gremlin vs the Superpig? Or do you recommend a different manufactures volume shifted board? Thank you !

I’ve watched both of your reviews on the Gnu Gremlin and the Rossignol XV and I’m torn. I’m mostly an East coast rider; groomers, hard pack, icy toward the spring, powder if I can get to VT. I mostly carve and bomb it to the bottom, some trees and jump kickers on the side of the trail. I currently ride an 157.5 Gnu Riders Choice from a while ago. Which one would you buy?

I’ve been riding for 10+ years. I consider myself an intermediate rider; I can hold my own but I don’t go too crazy.
I’m interested in the gremlin but I’ve always ridden rocker. I’m looking for more power and pop for carving hard lines. However I want something i don’t have to fight through the trees.
Is this asking too much and would the Gremlin do the trick?
    I’m ~175lbs and currently on a 157 Box Scratcher.

    Hey Angry,
love your style and thanks for all the input here.
I do mostly piste-groomers carving, chasing pow, hitting small side jumps and non existent in the park. I am 5’6, 175 lbs on a good day with 8,5 feet.
I have a Jones Frontier 159 as an all mountain board. I am looking for a second board with a more pow / freeride focus with still resort carving ability.
Based on your videos, I was thinking Gremlin.
Should I go with a volume shifted, mid wide as my feet are on the smaller side. Would the extra width still help me on carves and let me downsize fow pow? is 152 the right size for me, with good pow-ability? Would 155 be too wide?
How would you consider Nitro slash or Ride Superpig?
OR should I go with a more freeride focused board like Rome Ravine (select), Niche Maelstrom, Nitro Squash, dropout, Jones flagship, Koruas etc.
    Thanks.

I live in Sogndal Norway, so the riding is mostly offpist powder, drops, some tight woods and natural hits. I like to ride aggressive and throw some freestyle in the mix. For “big” lines I use my splitboard.
Im looking at alot of different boards.. Right now im between the Gremlin, Hyperkyarve and Ejack knife.. Different boards, but I like the sound of all of them. Got any tips? Sorry for the bad english.

If you want something that can do it all and handle switch better it’s the Ejack. If you want something softer and more playful for carving around and buttering then it’s the Hyperkyarve. The Gremlin will be close to your Squash but it is stiffer and more damp. It will ride a slightly bit better switch.

    Hey man,

I’m considering a 148 gremlin as a tree board for the east coast. I’m 5’10 and 165 with a size 8 boot. This would be the shortest board I own. Quiver consists of a 158 og spam, 156 iguchi camber, and 156 korua stealth. I tried a 157 Otto but found it to be way too stiff for me. Should have probably sized down.

I sold my yup earlier this year and I’m looking for something that’s similar ish but a bit suffer and wider. The k2 instrument is on my list to try as well.

Think the gremlin would be fun at that size for resort riding the trees and some groomers?

Thanks and hope you’re well in the new year!

Yo Angry – I’m 5’8”, 165 lbs., size 9 boot. Been riding 30 years typically on a twin shaped 153 – 156 size board but most comfortable on the shorter end of that size range. I’m primarily riding east coast crud with some freshies when luck strikes. Is a 148 too short? Gnu’s website says to shorten down 2cm but I don’t think a 152 will feel like I’m riding any shorter than I am now. Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it!

48 is perfect for you. Anything bigger would be a boat.

So I rode with a guy riding a Never Summer Harpoon, and was so excited watching this guy rip, and pop with this looked way to small board. I had been thinking about a gremlin for next season. What are the differences between their volume shifting. I do like the gremlin is c3, and magnatraction as I’m on the icy east coast. Feels so foreign to look small, I’m a big guy at 6’3”, 250 lbs, size 12 boot as long as I can jam my feet into them.

Ones a Never Summer which means it’s a turd and the other is Gnu.

Sorry to beat a dead horse but seeing two answers for size rec for a size 12 boot (52 and 55). I’m 6’0″ 200-205 and like to carve hard. Main concern with downsizing is overhang. Thx.

You won’t have overhang. Get the 52.

I’m 5’8 150lbs , should I ho with a 148 or 152? I’m looking for something agressive and playful that can handle the many conditions(mostly ice, sometime pow) we have on the east coast! Thx man!

There will be some overlap but it’s going to be noticeably stiffer and more aggressive. Kind of your choice on size. 55 for more playing around and easier turn initiation, 58 for more hard charging.

Hello Angry! Love your reviews. Looking for the Gremlin but in doubt about the sizing. I’m 6’4, 170lbs, size 10,5. I want it for ripping down, no switch, no park, no jibbing, just curves and carves. 152 of 155?

Hi Avran, debating between the Gnu Gremlin or the Burton Home Town Hero. Mainly riding mammoth every other weekend. Looking for a board that is stable and fun carve around the resort and the occasional side hits. I’m 5’ 5” 200lb and wear a size 8 boot. I’ve been looking at the gremlin in a size 148 or 152 and the Home Town Hero in a 152. What would you recommend?

    Reply
    • Angrysnowboarder says: January 9, 2023 at 10:18 am

That size 8 boot is going to be limiting on the Gremlin and at your weight you need to be on the 52. A 152 Hometown Hero is too small for you.

Thank you so much. I guess I won’t get any then, and use that money to renew my season pass for next year. I guess sometimes board don’t match the person.
