Music can be a highly motivating force when you’re on the slopes pushing yourself. It’s also a great way to tune out the noise and distractions of the world. Music is similar to every ones individual styles and the beauty of that is we get so many different styles. Personally we at the Angry Snowboarder like metal in all it’s glorious variations and since snowboarding is so serious we highly recommend checking out this mandatory metal.
Since the unofficial motto lately is “what’s old is new again”, we decided to dig deep into the archives and bring out a band that has decided that the decade of decadence didn’t die in 1990. That’s right the 80’s exude from every orifice of Steel Panthers being and they aren’t ashamed to embrace the over indulgences either. While blazing guitar solos, spandex, and videos documenting their over the top antics reign supreme, they also have a light hearted side which is to parody the very musical genre they’re a part of. In the 80’s there was Spinal Tap now there is Steel Panther!
Their most recognizable song is Death to All But Metal, which basically lampoons the last 10 plus years of mainstream crap that has been shoved into the our faces. What’s more memorable than a lyric like “Kill Madonna too then fuck her in the butt”? If you’re looking to slow things down a bit and get romantic with your lady there’s Community Project. The quintessential power ballad with a surprising ode in it, I’ll let you find out to what yourself. If you get a chance check out their album Feel the Steel.
Also a true sign that they’ve made it, they have a Behind The Music.
Now if hair metal isn’t your genre of choice we have Lipstick Liontigers. Hailing from Norway and having huge influences from Manowar and Iron Maiden this powerhouse unleashes a fury like being stuck on a chairlift during a hail storm. Arild our resident Norwegian is fond of this band as his third cousin forty seven times removed was the drummer. Now word on the street is that Danny Larsen is using these guys for his part with the Pirates movie this year. Since we know he’s all about metal, this could very well be true.
Songs like Heavy Metal Rocks and With The Power and Glitter and Glamour of Rock you get blazing guitar solo’s coupled with a great drum beat. Throw in a little keyboard action and you have a solid power metal combo. The mix of parody and metal is a perfect meld to keep you satisfied musically and laughing lyrically. What is better than Norwegian Viking Power Metal that sets out to not only tell a tale but do it in such a way that it leaves you laughing? Best of all you can listen and download it for free off the bands site here.
Since metal is serious and so is snowboarding you should definitely check out these two bands and take it all in. Cause really who doesn’t like it when someone takes parody as serious as possible like Steel Panther or having power metal ballads that are just so over the top like Lipstick Liontigers?
