If more people put real thought into what it takes to start a real snowboard company there would be less bullshit brands out there. Sure most people will never hear of these brands as they aren’t the Burton, Ride, or K2’s of the world but they’re still out there. Snowboarding is fun and we all love doing it but that doesn’t mean because you love doing it you should run a brand.
I lampooned starting a snowboard brand before because in the midst of this recession we’re seeing more and more micro brewed brands starting up. We all know snowboarding is fun and since real jobs suck it has to be awesome to work in the snowboard industry!
To this day it never ceases to amaze me how many people suddenly feel the compulsion to make a brand. It’s almost as if the sheer boredom of what they do on the daily drives them to enter into something they have little to no scope of reasoning for. In my latest depths into the bowels of Vimeo I came across this video about MadGirl Snowboards.
Yes sadly I did watch this video as it suckered me in with the name alone. Upon watching it I was struck down with a horrible case of PTSD left mortified clutching my keyboard having flashbacks of Bitch Boards. Now I’m sure the owner/designer/person outside of snowboarding is probably a nice person and all but what the fuck were they thinking branching out into the snowboard world?
The first problem in the video they start referring to their creation as Mad Boards. I would like to point out that there is a Mad Boards company, it is out of Canada. I guess researching a brand name or even an addition to an existing brand as it branches into a completely new industry is completely out of the question.
The second problem the damn price! $460 bucks for a board with a 2 x 3 insert pattern awesome! Just what I like with my board is limited stance options. That right there screams entry level. Even reading the specs from the MadGirl site they’re pretty basic.
Lack of stance options anyone?
If you braved watching the video you can feel the pain that this is causing snowboarding. Hell if you listen closely I’m sure you can actually hear another part of our beloved snowboarding’s heart breaking. All in all why can’t people outside of snowboarding just realize we have a good thing going and not to intervene. Art, fashion, and snowboarding sure they go hand in hand but if you call it ‘Extreme Sports’ you ought to be tazered and then pepper sprayed for being sedated in the 90’s. If you’re into fashion and expression of which your medium is clothing why not make outerwear or just slowly branch into soft goods? Why does it it always seem like hard goods is the answer? If you’re all into being environmental and part of that green washing ego stroking nature then why on Earth would you even create a snowboard? It’s possibly one of the most non-environmentally friendly things to build or even endorse as a past time.
All in all common sense it’s the one thing lacking in this world. So if you have it utilize it because it’s a precious commodity these days. Then again the world ends in a few months so we’re all fucked anyways!
