The 2021 Capita Black Snowboard of Death Snowboard Review

By Angrysnowboarder @angrysnowboard · On September 1, 2020

Board: Capita Black Snowboard of Death

Size: 156

Camber Option: Alpine V1 Profile. Rocker in the nose camber under foot, flat right before a short rocker section in the tail.

Bindings: Rome Black Label

Stance: 21.5 Wide 15 Negative 12 Goofy

Boots: K2 Thraxis

My Weight: 200lbs

Resort: Arapahoe Basin

Conditions: Warmer temps, sunny bluebird skies, zero wind, firm fast snow to spots that were a little more lumpy and slushy.

Flex: First off I want to say it feels like they softened this board up a bit from last year. It does have a true directional flex which means slightly softer nose progressively stiffening up into the tail with a very defined middle of the road flex that is a bit more loose. There’s a bit of torsional flex which helps with the twist and drive through the middle of the board.

Stability: So right under foot this board is damp and stable. You’ll notice that it just kills a lot of the vibrations there. In the tips you get some chatter and it does attempt to reverberate back under foot. In rutted out terrain this board plows up and over everything with ease without washing out or buckling.

Ollies/Pop: This board has snap. Due to the slightly softer flex this board is easier to engage. It’s almost a skate like pop but with a bit more rebound due to the camber in the mid section. If you load it up you boost and if you’re laid back you still get some pop.

Butterability: High speed wheelies are your friend, but you can get out over the nose and tail if you really man handle the board and lock into the sweet spots. It is going to fight you and there is a lot of rebound to it which will have you popping out of everything.

Carving: Here is where this board stands out. There’s a smooth and effortless transition from toe to heel. When it’s on edge it feels like you’re locked in and going to cut through everything in your path, but you can still disengage it when you need to. That defined middle of the board flex point is great for taking you from a mellow carve into an aggressive one. It allows you to steer from the front and then drive through the middle and rear of the board. Short tight quick carves or deep hard long drawn out ones this board lets you do anything you want.

Rider in Mind: The charging all mountain freeride guy that wants a 20 year piece of snowboarding history.

Personal Thoughts: While last years deck I understood who it was for, this years is by far the best BSOD I’ve ever ridden. It’s smooth on edge but still has the precision you want. It’s like driving a European R-Design car in the mountains, if you’ve never experienced that you’re missing out. The flex, shape, sidecut, camber profile are the culmination of 20 years of experience to bring you the best of the best.

Comparable Boards: Telos DST, Jones Flagship, Ride Berzerker.

Depends on how much you want to charge, if you’re really looking to rip 59, if it’s more for daily use 56.

    Helloes!

Intermediate rider here – I ride all mountain and you can nix the park unless its jumps. Grommers, trees, natural shit, gulleys, pow etc. Going mach 10 insnt my thing, I dont ride with stupid skiiers.

Trying to find a board to do all of the above and do it the best, choices:

This one, superpig or Niche Maelstrom.

Any other directional rocker, camber boards I should look at? And are these boards too advanced for me? Also I ride mostly in Scandinavia, so Ice is quite common but shouldnt be a deciding factor, just something to keep in mind.

Hope you are having a great day!

Yooo, need help with my next stick. Found a 157 classic camber awesymmetrical on your recommendation last season and could not be more stoked on it!! I just want something for deeper days now as I’m getting lazier in my mid thirties.

I’m looking for a board that will float well in pow, handle steeps, big-ish drops and rides decently enough switch for spins. What am I looking for? Volume shifted? Pow board? Free ride? Seems like the BSOD may fit? Sorry bro, I’m just an idiot who needs help.

Union Atlas, Ride C or A 10, K2 Formula, Burton Cartel or Cartel X, maybe the Genesis if you want to go that route, Rome DOD or Katana.

    Hey,
I’m buying a new board for my bf and not sure which one I should go for. He’s a great rider, loves to carve, go fast, jump a bit, do some butters and stuff on the groomers. Right now he has the Capita DOA and loves it, but would like something a bit more stiff and aggressive I think. I was looking at capitas bsod, Jones flagship and Korua trannyfinder. Do you have any recommendations?

    Reply
    • Angrysnowboarder says: October 22, 2020 at 11:52 am

Get him the BSOD, it’ll compliment his DOA and give him the added stiffness he wants.

How does this board compare to the super doa for agressive all mountain riding? When I watch both of your reviews, it seems to me that they are quite close.
    Thx

Torsionally softer and a more mellow ride. The Super DOA is closer to the 2020 BSOD than this.

looking at this years BSOD, i am deciding between the 159 and 161w, i currently ride burton small footprint boots size 11, and usually weigh between 185-190 lbs. i really want to improve my carving and be more aggressive this year. most days are spent in New England and 1 trip west, hopefully big sky this year. any suggestion on which size i should look into? thanks for the help!

Looking at a 162 BSOD or 162 Ravine Select. I’m 6’1″ 195lbs and looking for something that prioritizes the carving experience, charges through chunky snow, grips on ice, and is still fun to turn when riding switch. I like the look of the Rome’s sidecut for turning, but I’m concerned about how it rides switch. I’m curious what you think and how they might compare.

    • Angrysnowboarder says: November 16, 2020 at 9:10 pm

If you’re prioritizing carving you would be better off with the Ravine Select over the regular, otherwise BSOD all day.

Own a 157 mercury. 9 boot 170-175 pounds and very experienced.

Very happy with my mercury, but on the days my friends are riding fast and hard on icy shit I would prefer something else.

Dont want to sacrifice too much of the playfulness of the mercury – would the bsod be a worthwhile purchase or are they really too similar? I dont like overly stiff planks that are shit in bumpy icy snow, but want something wider and more stable with the same amount of playfulness if it exists.

Is 159 overkill? I was worried the 156 might be twitchier when going faster, as it is shorter than my 57 merc. Scared 59 will be TOO stiff.

Got this board and some Atlas’s in my cart.

Been riding an Capita OSL for the last 2 years and looking to transition into something more aggressive that’s better at speed and with carving. I was considering this and the Mercury. I don’t ride switch yet, if that matters. I’m still sticking to intermediate groomers, mostly, though we’ve had some amazing pow days the last 2 seasons. Is this setup overkill?

PNW conditions; I ride at Crystal Mountain mostly.

    Thanks for the advice!

If you’re not planning on doing at freestyle riding this makes total sense as the next upgrade. If you’re looking for something with at least 50% freestyle capabilities I’d look at the Mercury.

Directional all-mtn/freeride resort board that can hold an edge on firm steeps and then carve/blast through chopped up resort crud at Big Sky? Currently on 154 skeleton key and love it. Want more stiff and aggressive board to complement. Advanced, smaller rider: 5’7″, 145lbs, size 8. Thinking BSOD, Banker, Flagship, Amplid UNW8 or Creamer. Thoughts on those? Think 156 BSOD too big? Something else I should consider?

    • Angrysnowboarder says: December 7, 2020 at 9:10 pm

I think you would want an Ultra Flagship honestly if you want stiffer than a Skeleton Key, maybe the UNW8 would fit that bill.

      • Trev says: December 8, 2020 at 1:22 pm

Awesome thanks. Main complaint with SK is that the nose flaps at high speeds. So ideally something similar to SK, but less powder focused and slightly stiffer (mainly through the nose) for charging steeps. Would definitely go Ultra Flagship or UNW8 if you think that’s the call. Just don’t want to go too light/stiff and sacrifice the damp/smooth ride. What about Maelstrom? Mullair (err Essential Service), Berzerker, Hovercraft, PYL? Something else I’m missing? Thanks again – appreciate your time

Looking for a board to compliment my LibTech Orca 153 for the days without powder. Something to handle the dust on crust, hardpack and chunder, and charge/carve up the groomers. Be nice if it’s capable in the messy left over snow in the trees. Riding Mt Rose/Tahoe.

I’m 6’1″, 165-170lbs, size 12.5 K2 Thraxis. Wondering if the 161W might be too much, since they only make the wide boards in such a long size. Other recommendations? This board seems killer and the type I’m looking for. I also have a Jones Explorer 158W that I’m currently using for those days, but would rather use that just for early season conditions. I’d like something more aggressive than the Explorer.

Was wondering if you think this board would be the best pick for me, Im an aggressive rider whos 6’3 175lb and consider myself pretty advanced whos looking for board that can handle bombing runs, very responsive but playful with side features and still be able to have fun in the park. I also board in the north east and was wondering if I should be getting this or if you have any other recommendations ??

Currently thinking BSOD in 161w or 162. Was also looking at Yes PYL or Jones Flagship. Don’t want too crazy stiff because I’m looking for a daily driver for most days. BSOD still? What size? Thx man!
