Board: Niche Pyre
Size: 155
Camber Option: Back-seat camber with a rockered nose. Setback camrocker.
Bindings: K2 Indy
Stance: 21.5 Wide 15 Negative 12 Goofy
Boots: K2 Thraxis size 10
My Weight: 195lbs.
Resort: Copper Mountain
Conditions: Puking snow, low visibility, moderate winds, warmer temps with humidity, and powder groomers on the runs with about 4 to 8 inches off of them.
Flex: This board is on the stiffer side for something that’s a medium volume shifted board. You do have a directional flex with with being softer in the nose and stiffening up through the tail. The torsional flex is there but not highly abundant. Overall this board is on the softer side of the freeride spectrum.
Stability: That wider platform coupled with traditional camber does a great job of absorbing chatter. You never feel any real leg fatigue and it just plows through chunder with ease. You can charge with this board and not have to fear getting bucked around.
Ollies/Pop: This board has some decent snap to it. That wider platform off the tail coupled with that set back camber gives this board nice solid snap for boosting off cat tracks, side hits, pillow lines, etc. etc. You don’t have to aggressively load it up to get what you want out of it yet there is a lot of rebound.
Butterability: That nose takes a while to get used to buttering on, but once you find the sweet spot you’ll be golden. There is rebound that fights you with this board so be prepared to have to muscle it just a little bit.
Carving: The sidecut grips when you need it to on firm and icy snow. You can rip a carve with ease and not have to worry about the initiation as it’s nimble. I will say that if you’re looking to drive the carve of this board you will have to push into that camber more than you think.
Rider in Mind: Powder guy that doesn’t want a drastically downsized pow board.
Personal Thoughts: This board was super stable and while I know I could have gotten away with the 150 the 155 was solid enough. This is a board you can charge with when you have to or be a bit laid back when you want to. The conditions were perfect for seeing what this thing could do and it didn’t disappoint.

Pyre or Stun Gun?
Yes.
Same board or both so good, you’d own both?
yes.
Pyre or Rome pow MT?
Pyre.
WAs wondering between these two and the capita slush slasher. thoughts?
Slush Slasher will be a lot softer and more playful.
so i shuould get the
I ride the niche story 159 as my daily driver.
So I should get the slush slasher over the pyre? my home mountain is in the PNW, eastern wa. we get a decent amount of powder days that are knee high, and maybe once a season a waist high weekend storm. Looking for a powder board to compliment my niche story for powder days and might be going to japan next season.
Buy them all.
5’75, 143lbs advanced to expert rider
just for carve and pow 150 Pyre or 148 Mosqito, other Board in mind…
Thanks for answering
Mitja
Mosquito for sure.
as always fast clear and honest answer,
will order the mosquito…
K2 cool beans or the pyre
Depends on what you want. Cool Bean loses a bit of versatility due to the flat tail of it and it takes more effort to roll it edge to edge. Pyre is a bit more playful, similar float, grips more under foot as well.
How does this board compare to the Telos Backslash?
Little more damp and slightly stiffer.
Thanks Angry for the feedback. If you don’t mind, what board would you take for a trip to Whisper Ridge or Baldface?
On of these two, or something else?
Both.
Deciding between the Orca and Pyre for a powder/freeride board. Which one would you recommend? Looking for something with good float during the deepest powder days in Hokkaido and can he its own in crud.
150 should be enough float for someone that is 5’10 and 185 lbs?
Might want a little bigger if you’re pushing through chunder. Either will work.
Hi Angry!
Im looking for a board to add to my ride algorythm. Id like it to have nice float in pow and be nimble enough for the trees. Id also do a lot of sidehits and a lot of carving on groomers. It shouldnt be too hard to handle, as i’d also like to do some more laid back riding when im not charging. Would the pyre fit the bill,
Or would you have any better suggestions?
Btw never seen anyone answer as many questions as you do, you seem to really care about your community, really nice to see
You definitely nailed it with the Pyre for sure. If you wanted something a little more forgiving torsionally I’d say look at the Telos Backslash as an alternative if you can’t snag a Pyre.
Okay thanks! Cant really get the telos, as i dont live in the US. Would the yes the y also provide what im looking for? Or would that be too aggressive for occasional laid back riding?
No the Y would be perfect, if you were looking at the Optimistic that would be too much. You may even like the Superpig.
Nice i think ill actually go with the y, looks great! Thanks for the help.
Last question: im 180-185 lbs with size 10, would you recommend the 151 the y or the 154 for me?
You could do either honestly. I’d say the 51 will be more laid back and playful, but the 54 will have more float and better drive if you want to really rail it. The thing to understand is this is a downgraded Optimistic so ask yourself what you want performance-wise and then how going to a 51 or a 54 will effect how it rides with your riding style.
Okay ill take this into consideration . Thanks a lot for the help angry, really appreciate it!
How would you say this compares to the SPAM?
Probably using words and descriptive language.
Looking for a surfy pow board that can also plow through the chunder after it’s tracked out. It would be my 2nd board to supplement my Dagmar. I’m 6 foot, 180, and used to riding rocker dominant boards I’m trying to decide between this and the cool bean. Any advice to decide between the two?
damn… meant to write this on the Nidecker Mosquito review… any advice between those two boards?
Cool Bean is stiffer than the Mosquito for sure. That makes it better for plowing through chunder that’s for sure.
Pyre 150, Mosquito 152, or Backslash 153 for complimentary quiver to Jones Flagship? Mainly west coast (Mammoth & Tahoe) with occasional trips to Canada, Jackson, etc. A focus on pow first and foremost and carving second (need backfoot camber). Aggressive rider, size 11 boot, 185lbs.
Pyre.
Thanks Angry. And 150 over 155 for my weight, right?
Yes
Is 150 still good for 10.5 boot, 200lbs rider?
Sure.
Am I overthinking the 155 if I’m looking for it to perform on deeper days? Feel like I’m right in between sizes.
Sure.
