The 2020 Jones Mountain Twin Snowboard Review

By Angrysnowboarder @angrysnowboard · On August 15, 2019

Board: The Jones Mountain Twin

Size: 157

Camber Option: Camrock. Camber under foot and rocker in the tips.

Bindings: K2 Indy

Stance: 21.5 Wide 15 Negative 12 Goofy

Boots: K2 Thraxis Size 10

My Weight: 195lbs

Resort: Copper Mountain

Conditions: Overcast skies, light spring snow falling, ice, groomers, heavy chunder, and some wind.

Flex: For 2020 they softened this board up just a bit and you can notice that the most in the tips. There’s just more give out there. It still retains it’s all mountain versatile flex that is about a middle of the road, but instead of it leaning a tad more towards the freeride spectrum it leans more into the freestyle side of things. There is an ample amount of torsional flex as well which helps with steering this board.

Stability: I noticed more chatter under foot in this board than in years past. Those micro vibrations seemed to really to resonate underfoot. You get some chatter in the tips at speed. In rutted out terrain the board bends more with the contours of the snow than skipping across the top.

Ollies: That camber under foot gives this board snap. When you load this board up it activates the rocker zone and you feel it rebound which launches you up into the air. You do have to set up a bit ahead of time to pop with it.

Pop On Jumps: This board is fully at home on jumps of all sizes. It loads up with ease and snaps off the lip.

Butterability: With the softer tips you have more play and a bigger sweet spot to press into. As such you can butter more often and faster. It locks in and has minimal rebound so the fight isn’t there.

Jibbing: Nose and tail presses come easier on this iteration of the board due to the softer flex. That sweet spot really locks in and holds, but still provides pop where you need it. Getting sideways on a feature you feel it hug and hold.

Carving: Turn initiation comes with minimal effort. You’ll notice right away this board rolls in and out of turns with ease. When on edge and driving hard it holds firm and plows through anything in its path. If you center flex the board you can drive it any way you want.

Rider in Mind: All mountain rider with a bit of freestyle flair.

Personal Thoughts: I dig the idea of this board being softened up. It gives it a bit more play and if you want a stiffer version you can always go to the Ultra Mountain Twin. This makes it a more versatile all mountain board in my opinion.

When is the algorithm review coming out? Im assuming these are similar boards because you told me in an email to look out for it. Which would be the more dynamic carver? Coming from a umt that i broke last year

Probably this week, playing catch up on some stuff. The Algorhythm is softer than the Mountain Twin, but just such a solid ride.

I ride a 2017 ultra mountain twin 157. Am 5’8 and around 170lbs…love the heck out of this board and mainly ride east coast with one or two trips out west per year. I’m ready for a new board but have heard that the new ultra mountain twin is even stiffer than my model. Should I look at the mountain twin instead? Perhaps the now softer Flagship ?

I had the 14-15 model of this board and this thing ‘rail road’ tracked after 12 days of riding. The base wore down so quick that the edges stuck out more, and it felt like the inside and outside of my board was trying to engage and edge hold. Do you think the new models of this board are more durable? After a handful of days hitting boxes and rails the base turned to shit, literally. I told myself to never buy a jones again because they’re dainty cheap board and not made to hit features. The durability aspect is one that only a person can advise on over time and I can assure you the model of this board I had was crap.

I’ve since put 200+ days on my yes greats with no issues. I loved the feel of the mountain twin and the greats, as with the same profile I feel they ride similar.

With this being said, what board can you recommend that is similar to the greats and mountain twin? I demo’d a lobster halldor pro – despite being camber – and that board was awesome too, but I think I need rocker in the tips for my CO riding. Thanks!

Hey really appreciate all your reviews -you’re doing great work! Just have a quick question for you?

Jones mtn twin vs. NS Proto type 2

I am an intermediate rider who just needs one board to do it all.

Something I can have a good time in bounds riding. Not spending any time in the park but like to hit natural jumps and kickers.

Prefer riding trees and powder (when I can get it) but other than that I’m primarily riding groomers and carving.

    Thanks again!

I can’t decide between the Jones Mtn Twin and the Ride Warpig.
I mostly want a do it all type of snowboard that’s also good in the park. I’m in SoCal so I don’t get much powder either. The only worry I have with the Warpig is that it might be a little short on me. I know its volume shifted but I am 6’5 and 225 lbs with a size 15 boot. Do you think I should get the Mtn Twin or the Warpig?

    Thanks so much!

Love your reviews, they’re always insightful without coming off as a corporate shill. I’ve been debating between the Mtn Twin and Capita Mercury. They seem really comparable to each other. I do mostly groomers + carving with the occasional tree run. Intermediate-advancedish rider. Don’t really do the park much other than to jump off things and split my time riding between the East and West coast so there will be a mix of ice and pow.

As someone that’s ridden both, which board would you recommend? Or if it’s a dealer’s choice situation what would you say would be the differentiating features between these two quiver-of-one type boards that would help me decide? Currently leaning towards the Mtn Twin (though I hate the 2020 top sheet design, love the Mercury’s).

Looking forward to your next review!

I’d go with the Mtn Twin it’ll have better edge hold for the east coast it’s also every so slightly more stiff. Although if you’re not doing any park a Flagship might be better for you.

Hey mate, picked up the JMT the other day and im trying to decide on what binding to pair up with it.

Intermediate riding mainly groomers and a little bit of off piste and pow.

I had planned on going with Union forces or malavita’s, but a set of the Baldface x union colabs (falcor base and straps but with a more mellow team high back)is on sale for a steal. Do you think that would be too stiff with the mountain twin and should go for one of the other two or can you recommend something else?

what is your opinion, isn’t 161 too long?

61 will be a bit long you’re also saying a board that’s 7 years old is chattery, that’s like saying a 7 year old car doesn’t have its original horse power. Things diminish.

Hey! I am hunting for a snowboard for my bf who is 6’2 and around 150-160lbs. I’ve always been a fan of Gnu but JMT seems to be getting great reviews. It’s been a while since he’s hit the mountain and so he doesn’t want something too advanced or hard to ride but at the same time he is one of those people with great balance that can jump on anything and go. What are your thoughts and what size should I go with? Thank you!!

Well good on you for getting him a board. Instead of the JMT check out The One by Rossignol, similar camber profile, good sidecut, but not as demanding and won’t hold him back.

hi, I’m looking for all-mtn board with a little FS, a lot of switch ride with flat tricks, like both buttering and carving, need to have a good edge to edge transitioning, no powder or park. Jones mtn twin vs NS proto type 2 vs Salomon assassin? What is your choice? Many thanks & all the best

Personally, I would like to go with assassin but a little afraid with the width at inserts.

Hi! Thanks for your review. I bought a JMT and still have the wrapper on it because I’m also considering the Ride Algorythm or Capita Mercury. My local shop only had the Jones and I haggled to get a good discount so I’m excited about that.
I’m a weekend warrior Dad from the Northeast that’s been riding a few times a year for over 20 years on fully cambered boards. I’m mid-level intermediate and currently ride a 2013 Rome Anthem 159. The board is too much for me and I’ve been looking for an all-mountain board that is less stiff with some rocker tech. Quick edge-to-edge transition is important because I often end up needing to make fast, quick turns when dealing with uneven terrain, moguls, and the occasional tree run.
I’m 5’-11, 160-165lbs. with a size 10.5 Burton Imperial boot. I bought the JMT in a 155 wide. I feel like the JMT should definitely be easier to ride than the Anthem but is it still too much for my experience level, or would one of the other boards be more optimal? If JMT, does the size seem appropriate? Thanks again!

Hey Angry, really solid review. I’m 6’1, 190lbs, 10.5 boot and I’m currently trying to decide between the Jones Mountain twin 160, Yes typo 158, Yes standard 159, Salomon Assasin 159 and the nitro team 159 all of them from 2020. I’m really wanting one board that can handle the whole mountain well in most if not all conditions. Priorities are ability to pop off side hits, good turn initiation and edge to edge for the trees, and being able to play around in the park here and there while still hopefully being a somewhat stable ride.

The boards going to be rode with Salomon Hologram bindings. Thanks in advance.

Did you have a chance to ride the 2020 Yes Standard in comparison to this? I’m currently debating between the Mountain Twin and the Standard. I’m an intermediate rider and looking for an allmountain board that’s stable for moderate charging (40-50mph), doing deep carves but still playful enough to improve my skills for riding switch, buttering and doing side hits/jumps. A little bit of chatter at speed is okay. Tried the Mercury because it seemed right up my alley and while I liked the feel of the board, I had to be careful not to overpower it on hardpack or it would start to skid. I’m 6’2, 195lbs with US12 boots. Any other boards I should consider too for my size?

    Hi Angry

    I’m stuck between these options:
    1) T.Rice Pro HP vs Mountain Twin
    2) If it’s the Mountain Twin, then 2020 vs 2021 (new spoon shape)

I’m a mid-level intermediate, considering the Mountain Twin but thinking on the T.Rice Pro Hp too.
This will be sort of my first purchase of board as I’ve been using a second-hand YES Basic previously. I’m 5ft 9 (176cm) and 172lbs (77kgs) and my boot size is 9.
My style of riding would be 90% groomers, powders, venturing off-piste and maybe 5% freestyle and 5% park (have not been to the park before).

Even though the MT 2021 spoon shape supposedly helps to initiate the turn easier than 2020, but does it take longer to engage and enter the turn due to the contact points being lifted.
Could you share your thoughts on pros and cons of the 2020 vs 2021.

    Thank you!

If it’s the Mountain Twin, what size??
    161w? 162? 164w?

    Cheers man.

You’re on the right track with this board, I’d say get the 61w.

In the 2021 version they added spoon tech 2.0, do you think this will change the board to the better or same?

Regarding stiffness when comparing to the mercury are they the same?

I think it’s going to subtly change the way it rides. You’ll notice it won’t have as much slow down in low angle terrain or cat tracks as it’s elevated, it’s going to float a bit better through pow. In regards to the Mercury, the MT is stiffer.

    Evening.

The new mountain twin has spoon nose and they seem to have soften it up quite a bit since its only using biax fiber and not triax.

Do you think it will have a significant difference in how this board will ride? And to the better or worse?

    Hi,

Looking for a do-it-all board for a resort riding old guy. Dont get much powder, but id like a board that doesnt totally suck in this aspect. Other than that I do it all on the mountain, except jibbing, my knees will turn to dust if I start jibbing. Mainly carving and going through trees is my favorite thing to do. Lastly, there are some kids in the picture, so needs to not kill me when im taking it easy.

But what board do i get? Superpig, MT, Mercury, party mod, Arbor coda rocker/camber, YES the Y, Asymulator, GNU RC (c2x), GNU Nuzoid, DWD KWON?

Get either the Y or the Superpig that fits your style of riding the best and won’t kill the knees.

Cheers, I’m 176 pounds so im in between the 151 and 154 regarding the superpig – prob want the smaller one? Yes the why I’m guessing 157 is my size.

I’ll look for whatever I can get the best deal on. Thanks man.

Go with at least the NX2’s or anything up from there. The Fuse line will be a tad too soft for it in my opinion.

Would the mountain twin best pair up with Union Strata or Burton Cartel? Or possibly the new Cartel X?

    Hi Angry.
Appreciate the reviews, very helpful. I’m finally replacing my ancient Burton Canyon. I ride the whole mountain (PNW) fairly hard with the kids, do jumps and spins and a lot of switch, would like to learn butter/press. I’m coming from a rock firm old 168 so excited to try something new tech!
Thinking a MT might be the ticket. 6ft, ~178lbs, sz11 US boot. What size would you recommend – 159W maybe, or something else?
    Thanks!

Hey what’s up, so I live in SoCal but travel for good snow, I ride 50/50 park n pow hunting in trees n steeps, currently ride GNU Street btx 152 n magne traction or comparable is a must have but my board is crap at speed in choppy conditions. I’ve ridden the t.rice pro and the waviness underfoot of the c2 hybrid feels weird n is unforgiving so c2 boards are out. Been looking at arbor element camber 154 and jones mt 153 or maybe a c3 profile from lib/gnu if u have a rec that beats these other 2 boards out? What are your thoughts

Shopping for a new board late in the season. Just starting again after 20 year layoff. Living in Hawaii I’ll need a board that can do it all when I make it to the mountains. I was looking at the Capita Mercury( but can’t find any), the Jones Mountain Twin, and the Yes Typo.
6’2″ 220#’s Maybe an intermediate boarder, I like to carve, and have a skateboarding and surfing background. Probably won’t be in the park but would like to be able to learn some basic tricks and catch a little air here and there.

    Hey buddy

Loving the reviews, I’m considering a mountain twin as my daily driver, I’m also considering a lib tech box knife or k2 party plater. I’m 160lbs and have size 9 boots I ride a bit of everything except the bigger park lines . Any thoughts on which is the better board. Cheers man

    Hey what’s good
I’ve been riding an Arbor Element 159 the past few seasons and I’m thinking of getting a JMT soon. I’m 180 lbs, 6’0″, and wear a size 10.5 boot. Bindings are usually +15/-6. I’m leaning towards getting a shorter board this time around. Would you recommend a 156W or a 157?

How much of a difference would I notice in the stability at speed between a 157 and 160 in the Jones MT? I’m not a park rider and enjoy carving the groomers. I’ve only spent a total of about 40 days on the mountain in 4 years and i’m still not confident bombing steeps. I’m 5 foot 9, 165, size 10 boot and loved riding the 157 but couldn’t demo a 160 anywhere.

    Hi my man!

Here is the thing, I have like 40 days on my Jones Explorer and im looking for some advice to proceed from here. Id like to upgrade to either a Mercury, Mountain twin or Greats. But will getting a new board of this type make me a better rider or am I better off just riding my explorer into the ground? How do you actually know when you should a new board objectively?

I have some FOMO regarding new boards and tech, if you couldnt tell.

No board will make you a better rider, riding more will make you a better rider and being able to adapt to conditions and understanding the nuances of flex points and how to drive the deck. With that said there comes a point when you realize a board isn’t stable at speed, doesn’t have the pop you want when you load it up, or won’t flex how you would like. When you get to that point you should look at another board.
