Tech Talk: Flux Bindings

By Angrysnowboarder @angrysnowboard · On August 29, 2010

Flux bindings have been creating bindings for 18 years. With an alternate start coming from a guy working for a Japanese car seat company. One of the most notable things they’ve done is infusing urethane into their bindings to allow for better tweaks and movement. Here’s their tech video’s breaking down their line for 2011.

I find it funny how Johan started doing the video blogs / tech features with Union and Capita and now everyone is following the lead…… Could we even go as far and say everyone is starting to take notice that Union is the leading brand where Materials Matter and now people are playing catch up?

wasn’t a ton of change in bindings from the late 90’s till Union came around….. I mean my old Prestons are the same shit Ride has been putting out, just with dated straps.

I’ll definitely give Johan credit for starting those video clinics, that is one of the best things C3 has done with getting the information to the people. But why is it all Unions remind me of my Drakes from 1997?

In my opinion, there was no change in bindings until Flux came around. There was no such thing as cap straps until Flux arrived. It’s a good design, so good, Burton stole it. A lawsuit later, Cap straps are an industry standard.
As for Unions, it seems as though they get good reviews but people can’t get past the Drake heritage.

^ perhaps they look like they came out of Japan because… [drum role] it’s a Japanese company.

The bindings from Flux keep on getting better for every year while Union rides on the “core” hype but still looks like Drakes from -98. I definitely agree on the Flux name changing thing though. Strange move to suddenly change well known names into letters and numbers.

I actually am in the market for some new bindings. Bought some Burton Customs last year from local shop and I am not to happy with them. Was considering some Unions. But they seem to main stream and, like others have stated, remind me of the old school Drakes. Wish Drakes were what they used to be but anyway… What do yall recommend for some new bindings?

I actually didn’t start the video clinic thing, it was something that Max Jenke and the Endeavour crew have been doing for years, I just did it in our way and put it out there for all the shops, reps and consumers to see.
As far as the Union Drake references, well the majority of us at Union built the Drake brand so you can tag that to Union but as far as similarity within the bindings, not a chance. Nothing compares to what Drake is or was with Union. It’s a complete different deal. We had to answer to other people back then and answers usually require compromises. Thus why we started our own thing. Way back in late 90’s Drake used DuPont plastic, but that changed down the road as things kept getting compromised. We use DuPont Zytel plastic with Union still, and that is about the extent of similaritys. We’ve never ridden on any tag line, especially that were “core” and have always put the product first. If you dig our bindings cool, thanks. If not, cool. Different strokes for different folks. As a brand you’re not going to appeal to all.

Well Johan your way definitely worked to getting it out there to the masses and you seem to be the one that made it way more popular. Oh dude I don’t doubt you had to answer to people at Drake hence why their bindings went to the shitter, but man there were a few great years of F60’s that just slayed it. But you can’t deny your buckles don’t strike a resemblance to Drakes and some of the milling really does make it out like they’re similar, but hey you’re doing your thing it’s all good.

Johan: Absolutely no disrespect from me but as you say, you can’t appeal to all. You guys have done a magnificent job, taking Union to where it is now. Keep it up! The Drake thing is probably a matter of looks more than anything else but as Angry sais. There is definitely a Drake feel about Unions.

Let me start by saying I have ridden every brand of new bindings except flux which will be my next purchase. That being said unions are grossly over rated they lack comfort, response, worst toe strap in the industry which still has not been addresed in 2011and I had three buckles replaced on warranty after 6 days.Rome bindings are functional and comfortable but lack durability and quality. Burton makes incredible bindings but honestly my favorite bindings to date are forum shakas and now Burton has followed their own lead lol and introduced the same flexible baseplate and hinged disc on the 2011 prophecy and co2 . I can attest as these are the only bindings I ride now (forum, shakas) one look from materials ,super Cush straps ,full cushioning and tons of gel make the shakas the most comfortable bindings I have ever touched amazing all around all mountain killers, they really do improve board feel and flex and not just on rocker boards but camber as well and will make u feel like a super hero!!! Could very well be a revolution in binding technology!!!

      Comfort is highly subjective.
