Shaun White: It’s Not Hate It’s Disappointment

The recent Whitelines piece “In Defense of Shaun White” attempted to answer the question “Why does Shaun White draw the ire of so many in the snowboarding faithful?” There were points and counter points, questions and explanations in the (overall) well-written piece. Still to me it did not really answer the question in as much as it did defend Shaun White. Frankly the private half pipes, while eye rolling, aren’t even in the equation for me. To me my disdain for Senior Blanco is not about what he DOES but instead what he DOESN’T do. To me Shaun White is a dick fuck because he gives absolutely NOTHING back to snowboarding…. fucking nothing.

Basically he uses his influential position as the current best half pipe rider on the planet to only line his own pockets with cash. Shaun doesn’t film video parts (like Danny Davis, Scotty Lago, and any number of other top tier competition pros). Shaun White decides he likes Jon Kooley’s signature L1 pant and uses it as a model to make his own pant. Shaun White sells rip off Etnies at Target for cheap so mom and dads don’t have to go to local skate shops to get the real deal. Shaun White uses his name to sell a line of crappy “BMX” bikes, skateboards, and fucking razor scooters. Shaun White uses artwork by his brother that looks nearly identical to well known skate and snow artist Michael Sieben to sell clothes. Shaun White owes everything he has, E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G., to that snowboard and there are a crap ton of riders who are a lot less well off than him who give a whole lot more BACK to snowboarding. I don’t know if he is a total douche, or under the control of “the man”, or just so completely out of touch with reality that he doesn’t understand, but either way he’s not on my list of favorite riders. If you want to talk skills, technicality, and longevity White’s name will always come up in conversation. However if you want to talk about the greats, the TRUE greats, like Jamie Lynn, Craig Kelly, or Mikey Leblanc well Shaun can’t hold a fucking candle to what those guys have meant and CONTINUE to mean for snowboarding. Hell even his boss Jake Burton has blown it a few times but has the sense enough to get his shit back on track. If Shaun would just throw me a little bone, just a scrap, I wouldd be happy. Say screw the X-Games and film a pow part, go ride for a little company because you don’t need the money … SOMETHING … ANYTHING. Of course that wont happen, instead we get private facilities and more deals for chewing gum and god knows what else. At the end of the day it bugs the shit out of me that Shaun White is the face of snowboarding to non-snowboarding America but doesn’t stand up for the ideals of community that snowboarding cherishes so much.

The shitty thing about the whole deal is that he doesn’t even have to be this way. If you want to look at the model for making it big and giving back to snowboarding you only need to look at the second most recognizable face in snowboarding, Travis Rice. Travis, since his days in the early Grenade vids, has been a groundbreaking snowboarder. Travis comes from out of nowhere, well Jackson Hole which is just next to nowhere in the “cool scene” of snowboarding, wins the X-Games and really never looks back. Travis Rice has filmed multiple video parts from Grenade vids to Absinthe, TGR, and now with Jackson homies Brain Farm … wait a minute you mean to tell me Rice uses his power within the snow world to HELP his friends?

What a novel idea! Travis Rice could ride for any company he wanted but choose to ride for Lib (and its important to note did so way before banana tech pushed Lib to the forefront of the culture). Travis has big sponsors too like Red Bull and Toyota and how does he leverage their power? Not to build a private jumping facility but to start the Red Bull Super Natural … see this is what I’m talking about … giving back. Until Mr. White can figure that out, and I truly truly hope he does, I really don’t give a shit about what he is up to. It’s not hate Whitelines, its disappointment.

They call him the Alabama Slama, he's not allowed in the south anymore.

All your argument for why your “disappointed” in Shaun White does is show why no matter what he does he’s screwed. Shaun has filmed plenty of video parts during his career… Remember his scenes in those Standard films vids from a few years back? He gives back to snowboarding by being the face of it. How many thousands of kids have gotten into the sport over the last 15 years because of him? You use Travis Rice riding Lib Tech a point of emphasis… So Shaun sticking with Burton his whole career is wrong? Umm double standard much? Listen I think he’s as big a douche as the next guy but everyone’s arguments on why just make all of us sound narrow minded and stupid.

  11. Mike says:

Hmm, yet another whiny, bitchy rant about Shaun white. Doesn’t give back to the snowboard community huh? I wonder how many people are employed, directly or indirectly because of him in the industry. How many non-snowboarders got inspired to ride after seeing him on tv, and went to their local shop to buy a board? He doesn’t represent what snowboarding is all about? I thought what snowboarding was all about was not giving a fuck what other people think about what you’re doing, having your own style, pushing yourself, and having fun. Seems weird that the snowboard community is mad that he doesn’t conform to the supposedly non-conforming style of the industry. All the negativity in the industry towards Shaun White seems more detrimental to the goal of HAVING FUN than anything Shaun White has ever done.

  13. Odizzle says:

Pretty good article. I agree with almost everything said here. However, I think the one of the reasons Shaun doesn’t film as much as other snowboarders is because he is trying to continue to be an Olympic athlete and when filming the potential for injury is a lot higher than when training, and practicing pipe runs. Just my two cents.

  14. RadMel says:

@lisevolution Tell me the last time you went to a video premier and left saying, ” holy shit did you see Shaun Whites part? EPIC!” … yeah… not since you were little – borrowing family “snow gear” and scrapping by to get a lift ticket once a week. He might’ve been on Burton for his whole career but you forget he dropped Volcom as soon as Burton put their bid in. He goes to the X-Games, Olympics, and gets his quota of Instagram pics with other riders, wins and then goes home. His name might inspire kids to ride, yeah, but tell me how of them actually have the chance to ride with him on the hill while trying to fulfill their Shaun White dreams… none. Living in a mtn town, I’ve met and rode with plenty of my inspirations. Like Avran said, Shaun gives nothing back – Nothing from his heart, nothing from his passion for snowboarding. If he just stopped being a Rockstar and started being a Snowboarder – we all might like him a little more.

  18. Firstly I want to say I’m not defending Shaun White and agree with most of this article, but I feel one little fun fact got lost in the explosion of Shaun’s Australian Superpark. He did bring up Toby Miller to his superpark at Perisher to help encourage the next level of talent with the types of features you need to be on top of competitive snowboarding.

Rumor had it that it was Shaun’s doing but it may just have well been Gopro or Oakley. Still this is the most I’ve ever seen Shaun White directly give back.

  20. JP says:

I feel your frustration about SW but I do think you have set a double standard. If you are so pissed off at him, just ignore him. I hate how snowboarding has turned into a Jr. High gossip column. Shaun is a celebrity, and snowboarding made him a celebrity. I would even say that Shaun is a product of snowboarding.

  21. Jerome says:

i completely agree with Lisevolution. Shaun has stuck with burton and oakley from the word go all though he has parted ways with many companies that many “core” riders would kill to ride for. lets not forget your hero Travis Rice came up riding for Rossignol not Libtech so think what you will about that decision but Shaun sticking with burton rather than making his own boards to be sold in target has ensured that the kids that wanna be just like white have to go get that BURTON product. Lets be real it’s BURTON spending the most money on snowboarding and getting more people in to snowboarding.
beyond any of that the best thing about snowboarding is supposed to be that you can be whatever kind of rider you want to be so why would you want to push someone in to the same lump of riders that he’s nothing like? why would you want him to try to pretend to be like Travis? or anyone else? it’s suppose to be a beautiful thing that you can be a snowboarder and be a dirty dirty gypsy or a skater kid or a contest jock or an art fag or a little bit of more than one of those things snowboarding is supposed to take you as you are antisocial super social whatever who cares. if you don’t like their style don’t watch i really think it’s that simple.

  22. Radboarder says:

Listen Everybody– SHAUN WHITE is both a SNOWBOARDER and a SKATEBOARDER. He’s pretty dam good at both …….and to do both—-is FULL TIME JOB!! YESS!! HE JUST DOESN’T SNOWBOARD PEOPLE–HE RIPS AT SKATEBOARDING AS WELL AND THAT SHIT TAKES UP MAJOR TIME MEANING HE HAS MANY FOCUSES. HE DOESN’T HAVE TIME TO “GIVE BACK” TO WHO EXACTLY? DO YOU WANT HIM TO STAND ON THE SLOPES OF BRECKENRIDGE AND PASS OUT HUNDRED DOLLARS BILL BRAH ON YOU WAY TO PARK LAPS? BRO.

GIVE BACK TO WHO? DOES ANYBODY GIVE BACK TO SNOWBOARDING????? (I’M TALKING MAINSTREAM SNOWBOARDING–NOT THE PERIPHERAL BIG MOUNTAIN OR SAVE OUR WINTERS STUFF) LOOK AT THE MAJOR ENDEMIC SNOWBOARDING MAGAZINES OUT THERE—SNOWBOARDER / TRANSWORLD / SNOWBOARD…..THEY ARE SO DEEP IN BED JERKING OFF MONSTER ENERGY, BURTON, RED BULL AND ALL THE OTHER BOARD AND PRODUCT CORPORATION TRYING TO SELL & TELL WHAT “COOL” IS TO 15 YEAR OLD JUVENILE FLAT-BILL, BLACK HAT WEARING WANNA-BE’S……THEY GET PAID TOP DOLLAR SELLING PAGES IN THEIR MAGAZINES TO THE BIGGEST SELL-OUT BRANDS TO FEATURE RIDERS ON THE PAGES AND PRODUCT SPREADS…SHIT, YOU CAN’T GET IN A MAGAZINE THESE DAYS UNLESS YOU’RE DRINKING BUDDIES WITH THE EDITORS OR HAVE A SPONSOR BUYING PAGES FOR YOU. (PRACTICALLY)

GIVE BACK…LIKE IN A TERMS MOVIE THAT YOU HAVE TO BUY? OR BY CREATING HIS WN CONTEST TO PROFIT ON?

HE”S NOT OBLIGATED TO “GIVE BACK”. ALL these fraggin haters who think the top athletes in their sport need to “give back” are clueless. TRAVIS RICE doen’st “GIVE BACK” He just hooks his friends up AND MAKES MONEY!!!!!! HE GETS PAID TO BE IN MOVIES!!!!!! HE CAN’T COMPETE IN TH EPARK OR PIPE–AND THAT IS FINE..HE DOES OTHER SHIT BUT TO SAY HE IS THE MODEL FOR GOVNG BACK–NOT AT ALL. HE IS AN ENTITLED WHITE KID WHO GREW UP IN A RESORT TOWN OF JACKSON HOLE!!! TOUGH FUCKIN LIFE, MAN. AND HE WOULD BE THE FIRST TO TELL YOU HE WAS A PUNK GROWIING UP AND JACKSON LOCALS WILL TELL YOU THE SAME!!! He just designs new competitions tailored to his strengths and sells the BROADDCAST RIGHTS TO NBC!!! YES HE IS LOYAL TO BRANDS>>BUT THOSE BRAND PAY HIM!!!!!
GROUNDBREAKING?? HELL NO! HE”S JUST FINDING NEW WAYS TO MAKE MONEY OFF SNOWBOARDING JUST LIKE ALLISPORTS/NBC ESPN AND ALL THE “SNOWBOARD CAMPS” OUT THERE……MAKIN MONEY, SON.

PEOPLE ARE GONNA HATE TOM BRADY, JOE MONTANA, LEBRON JAMES, TONY HAWK , KELLY SLATER, MICHAEL JORDAN…….PEOPLE EVEN HATED LED ZEPPELIN WHEN THEY WERE BIG IN THE 70′S…………IT’S JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE JEALOUS. ( CAN YOU IMAGINE HATING LED ZEPPELIN? JUST CAUSE THEY WERE BIG)

SKATEBOARDING IS NO LONGER A CRIME—IT”S A SUMMER CAMP!!!! SNOWBOARDING IS NO LONGER IT’S BASTARD CHILD…..IT’S A SUMMER & WINTER CAMP FOR ENTITLED YOUTH WHO CAN AFFORD TO HANG OUT AT SKI RESORTS. LETS BE CLEAR–SNOWBOARDING IS NOT FOR THE UNDERGROUND, POOR OR AVERAGE KID…YOU GOTTA HAVE SOME CASH TO PLAY FROM SOMEWHERE.

BOARD SPORTS SOLD OUT IN THE 90′s , MUSIC SOLD OUT IN 80′s …IT’S JUST HOW IT IS PEOPLE–THE WORLD IS F*&%KED UP LIKE THAT BUT “THE INDUSTRY” AND “COMPETIONS” IS SO HUGE NOW, ITS A CASH COW AND IT’S ABOUT BEING IN IT TO WIN IT!! SURE YOU CAN JUST RIDE WITH FRIENDS AND BE A PURIST, BUT THEN YOU CANT HATE ON THE ONES WHO ARE GETTING PAID OR TRYING TO GET PAID. SHAUN WHITE IS TRYING TO GET PAID, JUST LIKE TRAVIS RICE, VITO, MITRANI, JONES, MCMORRIS, BLEILER, KELLY CLARK……..

THE REASON CERTAIN KIDS CHOOSE TO “COMPETE” RATHER THAN TO JUST “SOUL RIDE” AND LIGHT UP WEED WITH BRO’S IS TO HOPEFULLY “SELL OUT” AND MAKE TONS OF MONEY DOING SOMETHING RAD. THATS WHAT SHAUN DID. AND HE’S THE BEST AT IT.–PEOPLE ARE JUST PISSED CAUSE HE’S SOOOO DAM GOOD.

COMPETITIVE SNOWBOARDING BY NATURE IS TO MAKE MONEY AND WIN—–THE ONES WHO SHOULD BE GIVING BACK IS ESPN-MTV-NBC-ALLI SPORTS BECAUSE THE OLD GREY HAIRED EXECUTIVES ARE MAKING MILLIONS OFF OUR RIDERS…….COMPETITIVE RIDERS CAN’T BE EXPECTED TO DO MUCH BECAUSE THEY OF THEIR SELF-INTEREST.

MUSICIANS TRY TO PLAY PROFESSIONALLY SO THAT THEY CAN “SELL OUT ” WHICH MEANS- GET RECORD DEALS, BE A ROCK STAR AND MAKE MILLIONS……….THAT IS THE GOAL.

ROCK STARS DON”T GIVE BACK!! THEY SHARE THE MUSIC.

SHAUN WHITE SHARES HIS UNDENIABLE–BEST EVER ABILITY AND WHAT WE GET BACK IS INSPIRATION AND ENTERTAINMENT.

SNOWBOARDING HAS EVOLVED INTO A PRO SPORT AND PRO SPORTS ARE JUST ENTERTAINMENT FOR ALL OF US—THE ONES WHO CAN’T DO IT AND CAN ONLY DREAM OF IT AND BOTCH ABOUT IT.

SO THAN SHAUN–FOR HOW MUCH HE HAS PUSHED THE SPORT AND FOR HOW MANY TIMES YOU WATCHED HIM AND SAID” HOLY SHOT, THAT GUY IS GOOD”.

DONT FORGET TO LOVE IT. LOVE IT ALL AND ONLY DESPISE TH EXPLOITATION OF OUR SPORT BY GREEDY COMPANIES AND OUTSIDE INTERESTS TRYING BUTTFUCK CASH OUT OF US.

    CHEERS–

  23. will b says:

I’m not defending him here but one thing you failed to mention that he gave back to snowboarding, FUCKING WORLDWIDE EXPOSURE on an unprecedented level, that no brand or snowboard part could ever bring. How many kids are out ther snowboarding because they saw this kid on the Xgames or he Olympics? So i guess he did give something back to snowboarding, even if he is a douche or portrayed as a douche, but i am pretty sure he’s a douche.

  30. Snow3O4rder says:

The problem isnt shaun white but the way he is the figure head of a multi million dollar empire devoted to cheap functionless goods that are ultimately destined to rot in a landfill after little tommy (or susie) buy the newest shaun white xbox game. Hes not creating snowboarders, hes creating consumers. Hes incredibly greedy and has no shame in whoring himself out to the highest bidder. The scooters, the gum, the plastic kickers, its so excessive. Thats not what gets people into snowboarding or anything thats going to ultimately ensure the longevity of the industry and the sport itself. People hate shaun white because he is the lebron james of snowboarding. He only cares about fame, money, and winning (in something that at its most basic isnt even about!) like lebron he has a lot of fans because hes incredibly good but a lot of haters because hes so hateable! Why are all the best pro snowboarders besides him way better liked by snowboarders? Because theyre fucking humble and they know at the end of the day they snowboard for the love of it, not because what it gets them materially. As the author said, he has brought the hate upon himself, and you know why? Because hes got all he could ever want and doesnt give two shits if people hate him or not. While i may not appreciate what his name has become, not one fuck is given because i can do my thing and get my kicks the same way ive been the last 15 years.

  31. Rich says:

This angry snowboarder dude sure is angry. I don’t really get all the hate here. I mean Shaun White has done plenty for the sport and ya maybe he is slightly off-putting and cocky but I think he has the right to be that way. I tend to agree with Lisevolution and Jerome on this issue. Probably the most annoying thing though is Angry’s obvious obsession with Boner Banana lib techs. Honestly I would have expected a more educated individual with a site like this. Dude, get a clue, Mervin Manufacturing is a subsidiary of QUIKSILVER INC. I’m not sure if you know what that means so let me put it this way: It means that Mervin, by way of its parent company Quiksilver, is MUCH LARGER than Burton. Seeing through the mervin facade really opens your eyes. The “travis chose to ride for Lib Tech” comment is cute. Ya, just like Torstein decided to re-sign with DC (parent company? QUIKSILVER!!) out of the goodness of his heart. Its a classic marketing strategy and ultimately a big business/capitalistic practice. What continues to be hilarious to me is all of the idiots that fall for it and hate on Burton for being so “corporate”. I’m not saying don’t buy a mervin board, I’m just saying understand what you’re buying. Funny how Jake Burton throws so much of the Burton operating income back into snowboarding whereas 99% of all other companies answer to investors, many of which could care less about the snowboarding industry- and Burton gets all the hate. Countless snowboard companies are forced to pay the highest dividends possible to investors so they can harvest as much profit as possible (they are investors, after all). This means less cash to invest back in the company and R&D. So Mr. Angryhatemongerer I’d suggest you make yourself a little less ignorant and a little more educated.

  32. Kevin says:

Lets get one thing straight. Target snowboards has not happened because White is under contract with Burton.

This has nothing to do with anyone saying White should act like Rice. The point of bringing Rice into the conversation was to point out what someone with massive amounts of influence is capable of doing for the industry. Sure, White is the face and that alone is some form of service. By this point adding activities that also give back to snowboarding is not going to hinder his general public status and will only help our industry. So what’s his excuse?

I don’t think anyone would say White has stayed with Burton and Oakley all these years for brand loyalty. For all Red Bull has done for him (private half pipe with built in foam pit) he doesn’t ride for them anymore. He asked for too large a contract, they said no, he said bye. There’s some great loyalty for ya. Burton and Oakley are the largest brands in their category, I’m betting that no one else is willing to pay White what they do and that is the simple fact why he hasn’t left either.

  33. iKnwASecret says:

It’s a shame that someone can help a company sell a few snowboards. More than a few actually, so many snowboards in fast that they have the ability to give right back to the community. Burton can put so much into the community, in part because of Shaun, and the others like him. It so happens that a lot of the Burton athletes ride for multinationals like Nike, Adidas, Toyota, etc., as do several other athletes that Angry Snowboarder would probably regard as core athletes. Rich is right, a little perspective would do some good.

  35. Josh Turner says:

I would like to chime in for just a quick moment. I met shaun white in oahu a couple years back while photographing some snowboarding. he had sunnies on and his hair pulled back so i didnt recognise him. We chatted for about 30 minutes on the beach with a few of his friends talking snowboarding and surfing and whatever else. not once did he chime in about being the best snowboarder or whatever, just chatted plainly like anyone who loved the sport would. i wanted to jump in the water with my camera and was headed off to my car and saying goodbye to the people i’d met and he was the one who stopped me to catch my name. we did the introduction and it was at that point when i recognized him and asked if it was him. he was polite and non-eogtistical about it and simply replied yes. I left and never met him again but i’ll say my $0.02 that he seemed like a genuine dude when removed from the super-stardom of the snowboarding limelight. no one knows what its like to be him and projecting your views of what you expect of him is BS. i dont follow snowboarding that closely anymore, so maybe my encounter is one sided, but maybe having actually met the guy counts for something, and in my opinion he was a nice guy.

  36. Allison Hughes says:

Shaun White is a dick. Always has been. I had a day with him on the hill before all of his Olympic status and such and he was a cocky little ass hat then. As I’ve watched him progress in the sport of snowboarding, I’ve maintained that first impression he made… Cocky and arrogant. It’s unfortunate when you don’t even want to see an athlete from your own country be successful simply based on their arrogant attitude.

  37. Matt French says:

Out of all of this, the slap in the face to a former sponsor (Volcom) and one of their most well-known artists (Michael Sieben), when he took the big money deal at target, and ripped off his former sponsor’s art. This, out of all of this, is the unforgivable sin. I personally painted Shawn White’s portrait not once, but twice for volcom, and although I was paid well, I regret it…because my work supported this monster, this thief, this greedy person who is responsible for people losing their careers at burton, so burton could continue to afford him. Just think of how many snowboarders lost their jobs so that he could get EVEN MORE money. If that is rad, I don’t want to be rad.

  38. squidmonkej says:

Remember the world championships a few years ago? Remember who didn’t attend? Yup, Shaun White. You know why? He wanted 2 mill (I think) just to enter the contest. Some insane amount of money, just to ride the damn contest. Organisers told him “hell no”, so he didn’t go. I didn’t like him that much prior to this, but now? Damn

  42. McJib says:

Try harder bro…..Like many have said you are missing the biggest point which is world wide exposure of snowboarding since he won the his first Olympic medal. Young kids were flocking to the shops and buying boards. Your telling me if you had as many talents as him with snowboarding, skateboarding, racing, and being in a band, you wouldn’t be busy? He has one hell of a schedule. Instead of hating on him why not just hit the mountain yourself because you seem to have forgotten what snowboarding is all about. Yeah he may not be the best rider to look up to now a days, but remember you can get jaded by the luxury life style. Micheal Phelps is a giant ass hole when you meet him, but he is still one of the best swimmers of all time and you gotta respect that. So yes Shaun can be a major ass at times, but he is still one of the best riders out there and he deserves that much respect.

  43. Ricshayne says:

In my many years of Snowboarding not once have I given a fuck about what Shaun White does, doesn’t do, the money he has, or the stuff he does or doesn’t give back to the sport. Once a year, I watch him SLAY THE FUCK out of the competition at the XGames and every four years, do the same at the Olympics. and then when the Olympics, or the XGames are over, I go back to doing what every other snowboarder should be doing, riding powder in the mountains and not giving a fuck about Shaun White or any other Pro. Seriously, who the fuck cares?

  44. woah says:

i was reading this until i saw mikey leblanc in the “greats” … Snowboarding isnt about who can jump the biggest set of stairs..

  45. Bordman says:

Great Article. Everyone can respect his skill in both boarding and skateboarding, but actions speak louder than words and his actions have proven he isn’t focused on giving back to snowboarding in the way that we would like to see someone in his position do. To quote another comment, “he creates consumers not boarders”, that couldn’t be more true. Granted, snowboarding has become a very consumer-based industry, because of that fact it is easy to find companies out there to support that put more back into the sport. Worldwide exposure is good but I would prefer the mantle of snowboard ambassador to the non-snowboard community be some one who holds more to the true core ideals of the sport: Having fun and sharing that fun with friends and family on the slopes. That’s why we do this people, for fun, if it’s not fun don’t do it–somewhere along the line that turned into ‘if it’s not profitable (monetarily or otherwise) don’t do it”. I just wish things were different.

on a side note, putting out a jib edit would be a great place to start shaun, or really any kind of edit other than these annoying private pipe videos. JS

Careful who you root for ;)

  47. I see emotions have overrun the logical portion of peoples brains. I just want to point out that all the hate directed at me seems a bit misguided, I didn’t write this piece. 53. Tommy Steamboat says:

I’ve been snowboarding for 20+ years, and remember watching the TB movies with Shaun in his single digit years. Most X-Games memories are dominated by Shaun’s performance. He’s progressed from a adolescent phenom to a teen dominating competitive force, and maintains that into his 20s. I remember his pictures in old Burton catalogs near the Chopper board section. I remember when his pro models came out. The guy has quite a bit of history.

I’m your average expert all mountain 29 year old snowboarder living in Steamboat now. I look to Shaun White, and think wow, that guy has had quite the career, and continues to do so. That’s really about it. I have a lot of memories of the guy though, and through that thought process, have to think he has given back to snowboarding quite a bit.

Everyone is different out there, and nobody has the same approach when handed gifts. Shaun’s a brand, he’s a force, and is diabolical in the pipe. He has progressed throughout his career in his own way, and some clearly don’t agree with his approach. Maybe at this point he’s not helping implant the original snowboard mentality into the youth on the slopes, but who really cares? Open up a magazine, and pick your pro to follow. In the meantime, Shaun’s doing his thing, and absolutely killing it. There is no prescribed method to what he does (pun semi intended).

Typically not worth it to judge how others progress within a career, as long as they are not hurting anyone.

  54. treeboarder says:

Shaun doesn’t owe snowboarding or anyone anything……..nobody “gives back” in snowboarding–all the movies tpro’s are in is because they get paid to be in or they have self interest– all the shoots, magazines and competitions as well.
It’s the companies and magazines we should be critical about–they are selling our sport to the highest bidder–Navy? Taco Bell? ESPN? ALLISPORTS? MUSCLE MILK? MONSTER? RED BULL?

You have to respect Burton cause they have been there since the start—-same with K2, Oakley and a handfull of others.

Shaun White is the Best there is—get over it you pansy jr. high schoolers whining about who is popular— He deserves all the money and recognition. Just as much as any other pro athlete making endless sneaker deals, headphones, clothes, watches, cereal boxes, Jerseys, T-shirts, Hats……………..Shaun is just hooking himself up. I bet you wish that you could, but— you can’t. thats why the ones who can go all out.

He also skates and plays music—–sucks not to have that much talent doens’t it?

The other pro snowboarders are just being pissy high school girls–jealous and bitter. it’s “not cool” tohang with Shaun now. So shaun says fuck it–I’ll do my thing and ‘i’ll do it waaaaaaayy better than anyone else.

Enjoy these times while we can—–there will never be another who dominates like shaun has. Ever!

It’s all about the money—snowboarding is a fashionable and “mainstream” billion dollar industry. It lost it’s soul a long time ago. Did Craig kelly give back? Nope–he did his own thing, crashed Land Rovers, Trashed hotel Rooms and Fucked over Sims to get the cash at Burton!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeremy Jones—-bye Rossignol, I’m doing my thing for the cash!!!!!!!!

Why does everyone think he owes them? Does Mick Jagger owe anybody anything? Jimi Hendrix? Tony Hawk? Nope.

This is what I hate about Mr White. He doesn’t push the sport anymore than he has to. He only cares about what sells (He makes millions a year), For the past few years he done than same run he knows has gold all over it. If white would act less like a corporate machince and focus on the love and joy of snowboarding everyone would like him. But hopefully in sochi, ipod will have white’s head on a silver platter after he does a double 14 into a double mctwist.

    Dear Radboarder,
I understand your angst, but I would just like to mention one name: Ross Powers.
Two time Olympic medalist, and what did he do? Return to VT, marry the love of his life, and begin a humble, yet very rewarding career as a coach. Just this week, he was inducted into the snowboard hall of fame.
Nicest guy in the world. I consider it an honor to call him my friend.

  57. RADboarder says:

Just SAYIN. I thought this Debate was already played out in 2008 WHEN he WON GOLD.

P.S–Masturbation is Healthy and Wholesome;) Try it sometime, you wouldn’t be so Angry by not getting laid. Caps are much easier to READ on black Backgrounds.

Lets focus more on how our sport is getting raped and exploited by outsider interests, video games and corporations…….we need to prevent the creation of future “superhero’s” and bring the sport back to the checks and balances of our community. It’s gotten to be a pissing contest by sponsors and mags.

It used to be about hanging with a crew of friends and riding the afternoons away, but now it’s hate on skiers, hate on gapers, hate on peeps out of fashion, hate on the best, hate on street, hate on park, hate on pipe, hate on making money, hate on getting your halfpipe built, (Tony Hawk built his own skatepark in the 90′s), having your own halfpipe is everyones dream) hate on clothing lines, hate on product, hate on tall T’s, hate on skinny jeans, hate on flannel, hate on helmets, hate on each other…..WTF?

So Doubt Ross Powers is great!!!
But nobody is giving Shaun the chance to Retire and move on to something…He;s not there yet and he’s in his 20′s…..he’s still in his prime!! Living it up competing, training and getting it done. I’m not saying Shaun does everything right, nobody does…..especially someone in their 20′s who has been watched since a teen. I’m just saying that I don’t think people hate on Shaun for who he is as a person as much as what he has become to represent, the image that has been formed—some to which he can control and a lot that he can’t. I mean the guy rips it as one of the best in the world in snow and skate…and he surfs, he plays in decent band…..he’s just doing what every other one of us would do with millions—-live it up for now. When he gets to be 30 and he starts to have an opportunity to give back—I bet he will. If he doesn’t, well, then thats the time to write the dude off and stick a dick to his chest. If there was no Shaun White, who would be reigning on top right now–Ipod, Vito, Lago, P2, Ayumu? Do any of them give back to our satisfactory standards–if at all? I don’t know Shaun personally, but professionally he’s no different than any other pro athlete in the Major’s who makes 8 times as much as Shaun does. Nobody is asking Lebron james to give back right now–he’s busy taking Championships!!!!!! So is Shaun.

Shawn White is a giant douche but OP pretty much missed all the biggest reasons why and dwelled on the dumbest points. OP sounds like he can’t hang

  63. Snowboarding Fan says:

    ome things about Shaun:

Shaun White hates snowboarding now. I’m sure he loved it at some point. Many top athletes end up hating their primary sport because it becomes a job. For Shaun White, Snowboarding is a job. I think he likes skateboarding more, less important to his finances and more creative. And I bet he loves surfing the most, because he doesn’t make a cent from surfing.

Shaun White is a fucking superhuman beast. This guy in best in pipe, vert skating, and had been best in slopestyle for many years. He may medal in slope in Sochi. There is no pro rider that is close to his talent, and no snowboarders on the rise that is close. He has likely had dozens of concussions, many accidents that could have gone way wrong, and his body is likely fucked for good. By 40 he is going to be a fucking wreck. This guy is a fucking superhuman beast.

Shaun White has help build snowboarding. Because of Shaun, more people ride, more gear gets sold, more people watch events, slopestyle made the Olympics. Snowboarding should be sucking his cock, they owe him. Did he do it out of love? Nope. Was he great for the sport? Yep. There are so many pro riders that owe their sponsorship money to Shaun, because he helped grow the industry. This guy is owed respect.

Shaun White is likely an asshole. Hey, the guy is a competitive freak. Get over it. Think Lance Armstrong is nice? Think most athletes at the top of their game are nice? Nope. These guys are stone, cold killers. They win. They crush.

Shaun White is likely having a great fucking time. It is really, really good to be Shaun White.

Shaun White is fucking talented on so many levels. Have you seen how much money he is making? The guy is a business genius. Have you heard his band, Bad Things? They are fucking good. This guy is a fucking stud. Snowboarding will not see anyone like him again for decades.

Shaun White is going to win. He will win at least one gold, and maybe medal in slope. He may retire from snowboarding, or more likely keep riding pipe (where he can win at the 2018 Olympics). He will go back to vert skateboard, and he will win. You will watch his band play Letterman. He will make mad cash and milk it far longer than Tony Hawk. In 15 years, you will still be buying his gear in Target.

Shaun White doesn’t give a fuck what you think. The guy is living his own life. Maybe you should live yours and stop hating? He isn’t telling you how to ride, don’t tell him.

My kids wear the clothes and he is now a brand which brings money from TV and other places to the sport you love. So quit hating he is helping you in more ways than you know.

We gave him 3 in different sizes and colors in exchange for either a facebook shout out or just cash for the shirt. He took the shirts and we never heard anything back from him…

what a way to say fuck you to a core snowboarding project and real snowboarders. I’ve lost respect for that guy ever since.

  69. Hughes says:

I hope shaun reads this, starts smoking weed, riding rails ( witch he can’t ride ) , and saying fuck you to corporate america. part of the problem, fix it you ginger fucking idol fag

  70. Jason says:

Snowboarding stopped being a core sport when idiots stated buying Nike snowboard products. Mr White doesn’t ride for Nike or Adidas so he is not a total douche. Anybody that supports and rides on a tennis shoe companys product is a douche for letting these companies infiltrate our passion. Go shoot some hoops Nike lovers, leave the riding to the rest of us.

  71. dogonfire says:

I think tis article pretty much hits the nail on the head. One thing in Shaun’s defense is I have seen him several times hanging out with a bunch of groms in the ski area parking lot or outside the baselodge, and being a normal nice guy and just shooting the shit with them. I think he is more comfortable hanging out with a couple of 14 year old boarders tan being shoved in the limelight.
I really can’t argue with the other points but do find this a redeeming quality in him.

  72. AZZDOG says:

I think that he is a busy type of person, If i had to do all the things that he had to do. there wouldn’t be much time for other things. Kind of like Richard Branson, how he achieves goals and goes on to the next. He has properly had his day in that scene and is on to do doing bigger greater things. He has been doing it forever.
Really who wants to see a video of shaun white saying yeh so i wake up in my million dollar mansion and off to practice for the Olympics.
i think he is all right

  73. D-boy says:

To all of you who thinks what Shaun White is doing is great, has it ever occurred to you that you probably aren’t a snowboarder?

See, just because you own a snowboard and like to watch it on tv and hit the slopes every now and then, that doesn’t make you’re a snowboarder. I have the same relationship to tennis as you probably got to snowboarding, but I have the common sense to realize that I’m not a tennis expert, and I can’t talk on behalf of the tennis world. I’m a mere follower and I have dozens of other stuff I care just as much about. Actually I’m more concerned with when to plant my garlics than how the world of competative tennis is treating it’s athletes.

The thing you fail to grasp is that snowboarding is a lot more than just a hobby for us snowboarders. We all understand the aspect of giving back and taking part of the community. That’s why we all (and I’m quite certain that “all” is not an exaggeration) think that Shaun White is harming snowboarding in such a bad way that we feel the need to go out publicly and ask him to stop or even better, to change his ways. No one is denying the fact that he is extremely talented, but that is not the point. His exploitation of of snowboarding is actually hurting snowboarding, and it does so because of his success and complete lack of respect for the community.

Please stop your couch-boarding preaching, snowboarding is not a spectator sport, it is a participator sport.

  74. Shields, Quinn says:

I started snowboarding in the late 80′s, bought my first board in 1990or 91 (avalanche t-max, i think). At that time I had no idea i would be a snowboard photographer. I had been shooting photos for almost 4 years by then, but the more my friends got into it they wanted me to shoot photos of them. These guys that are probably still at are local Mt. doing more for the sport of snowboarding than Shawn W.

My first photos of S.W. where at the burton backhill photo shoot at timberline, Shawn was 9 years old. The kid was good for a grom, but what i noticed was the pressure his mom was giving him. I had never seen something that intense, he was 9. Not to defend shawn, but his mom/parents pushed him so hard that I bet once he got an agent and someone to handle sponsors and everything that he only sees it as a way to make money. You think his mom didn’t see that, burton sponsored the whole family at one time. Mom, knew hew was there retirement. On that photo shoot shawns mom was yelling at him to hike the pipe again. He kept complaining and she paid jeff brushie to carry him up the pipe. There’s a photo of it somewhere. If Shawn isn’t going to change(doubt it) then we the snowboarders need to give back to the sport in the names of the true role models, Craig Kelly, Jeffy anderson, Jamie Lynn, John cardiel, Tucker Fransen, Dave Seone, …………. there’s so many that I can think of before I even thought of S.W.. Peace Q

  75. drew says:

It constantly surprises me that so many people are so wound up by Shaun. Everybody rides for their own reasons, and that’s all he’s doing too. Is he, as a person, really a horrible and mean human? Not many people genuinely know. I thought snowboarding was all about just getting on with what you’re doing and not bitching and pointing fingers at someone who’s different to you?
It’s ridiculous that Travis Rice is hailed as some kind of saint for thinking up an event for Red Bull. Was it really such an amazing gift to give back to the community of snowboarding? Since when did “giving back” become so important that if you didn’t conform to doing it, you would be subject to such hatred? Yes I’m sure Travis worked hard at it, but I’m even more sure he had the time of his life implementing it.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, even more so these days as you can express it without even having to show your face. I just thought snowboarders were better than that, and didn’t need to bitch the whole time. Is anybody else tired of hearing people bitch about Shaun White? Come on guys. Change the record.

  76. Bo says:

Shaun brings snowboarding into mainstream households. Snowboarding kills itself by becoming more and more super core. In other sports everybody would praise him. We should be happy to have such an athlet, that represents our sport.

  83. Rosie says:

He uses his brothers artwork, even if the style is similar to another artist, that shows that he is helping sell his brothers art, not his own. I understand that you think everyone should support the core skateshops and small businesses, but did you even thin for a second that by selling cheaper versions of etnies at discount stores, he is helping put skate (like) shoes on the feet of kids who otherwise couldn’t afford it.
To be honest, his career days are limited as are the days of all pro-athletes. Can’t tell you how many washed up 30+ something yeara-olds find themselves eventually out of work with no real job skills. So maybe he doesn’t need the money, but maybe he is planning for the future. Why do you care? it’s his business model. don’t support him, don’t buy his products.

  84. Ponder This One says:

He might be a douche, asshole, fuck head, dick and fag. But remember, he started like everyone else. Lacing up, strapping in and riding every chance he got because he loves it, he has a passion for it, just like you or me or he still wouldn’t be doing it. The only reason your taking about him now is because he is in the spot light, has been, and will be for a long time. Yeah, he may have more advantages, but who are we to judge that and what he does with it… He made it. We all have had dreams of going big, revolutionizing the industry in our own way big or small. But the sad fact is, most of us will not get that opportunity. So again, who are we to judge how he goes about his business? Especially considering few can even comprehend putting themselves in his shoes, and even fewer can say Ive been there. The man has endless resources, if you were him, would you not do the same? Taking every idea, dream and fantasy that you’ve ever had, and make them a reality…? No matter how you answer that question, I don’t know Shaun White personally, he could be an asshole, and may not “give back” to the sport or industry in ones opinion. But in the end, the time and energy you’re wasting bashing someone who has influenced and will continue to influence the sport, could be used to, I don’t know… Give back in your own right. Why are you waiting someone else to do it?

Years ago—– I was “lucky enough” to hop on a chair with SW. I was nervous at first ,but I initiated the conversation.
Random chatter….. and I was STOKED to be apart of it. We get to the top, strap in, and ride down to the park. He ducks a rope, I duck a rope. He hits a kicker- I hit a kicker. Then out of NOWEAR he STOPS on the next lip.

He SCREAMS at me and says “WTF are you doing?” “The park is closed for ME” “I am training” “Get the fuck out” “Dont hit anything on you way down”

So instead of finishing “HIS LINE” he fallowed me all the way down to the lift.

I’n closure. FUCK THAT DUDE! You cannot claim a mountain or a sport. Snowboarding is all about sharing the experience with others.

Outside of that. We are all people and we all make mistakes, and I hope that we can learn and build from it.

  88. RADboarder says:

Shaun White is Just the first Superstar in Snowboarding so he’s taking all the heat. People Hated on Tony Hawk when he signed big and made videos games and the same with Kelly Slater. It’s because professional boardsports are still young. People called out Laird Hamilton in 1998 for selling out because he wanted to sign with a big manufacturer to maker safer, big wave surfboards.

In 10 years, there will be a bunch of Shaun White’s in Snowboarding—not as talented but selling everything they can to you.

D-boy– Don’t push people away and devalue them by saying that snowboarding is more than just a hobby for snowboarders…..so people who snowboard “a lot” know more? it’s not. That’s judgemental. So, the kids who can afford to live in a white, entitled ski town, cruise by on a part -time lifty job while driving their handed down parents SUV’s and buying $100 headphones to rock in the park are better or know more than others? Why? Snowboarding (like everything else) is a choice, an expensive one at that ….totally open to the public world. To say that someone who gets to shred 100 days a year knows or loves it more than a kid who can only do it 10 days a year by choice or because they also have other interests theu pursue in their life is as alienating and off-putting as YOU claim Shaun White to be to the snowboard community.

Snowboarding is NO LONGER an identity. It’s just a sport and a hobby in this modern day like tennis, lacrosse, basketball hockey, football, wii and yes —-all the other mainstream stuff in american hoopla. You can grow your bangs to hang outside you hat, rock 80′s style oakleys with flat-billed hats, oversized hoodies, flannel button-ups and even peach fuzz out a hipster mustache–buts thats a choice bro. Doesn’t mean you know more than a varsity jock on a college scholarship or a high school choir girl on her to music school. Snowboarding is on the internet, accessible to everyone. “how many days on snow, bro?” really doesn’y mean shot.

To say that anyone is “core” these days is elitist.

Snowboarding’s day as an underground movement was an awesome time and treasured era—but that movement is over. The “core” that is today are the current industry players. Yea, blogs like this are all we got for the unempowered to have a voice–but it’s “angry” and just a bitch fest. Pretty lame representation of “core”. Even the magazines have to whore themselves out part time to the Corporations now to fill it’s pages. It’s how America works.

The Core that was has rottened out, they have have grown up, been killed in avalanches or are now family/business men on to other interests and pursuits. One day, we all will be as well…life changes and evolves.

The attention span of any superstar, rock star, celebrity is narrow–so many people coming at them and things going on….how can they have time to give back—-or remember to “give a facebook shout out”? When they do, people still are not happy–they get called a “pussy” like Bono from U2. That guy single handedly saved 6 million lives in africa, now thats giving back, but I bet people here can still bitch about him.

  89. RADboarder says:

Drew– Good point about Travis Rice. When he couldn’t make money competing against better talent in the scopes of “competitive” circuit, he went along and made his own “competition” and made a shit ton of money selling the broadcasting rights to Red Bull and NBC sports.

Was that givin back? An exclusive event that did NOT allow snowboarding spectators or fans to attend–

Shaun is a good rider – no one can deny that. Is he a good person or good for snowboarding? I don’t know – never met the guy and have no intention of taking the time to see what all he does or doesn’t do for the sport. The sport has changed a lot in the past 24 years that I’ve been riding. I started out drooling over a Burton Woody that my parents wouldn’t buy me at the local skate shop. (My dad was having a hard enough time with skateboarding although he eventually helped build ramps and crashed hard trying to ride one.) I finally got my first board a few years later (Burton Free 6) and had to hike for turns or get a ride ride to a ski hill over an hour away or go out of state because the local hills wouldn’t allow us on. Heck, we had to drive over an hour just to find a shop that carried boards. Well, 45 minutes would have gotten me a Winterstick, but the soft bindings and no real edges weren’t going to cut it in the midwest. The next year, one of the local hills opened up for snowboarding and I got a job as an instructor. That was 1990 and Koflachs with Variplates were the bomb. For the next 5 – 10 years, the sport was still small and special in a way that it will never be again. You knew someone or could find a friend of a friend anywhere you went. You’d go to Stratton for the Open and cheer for your friends and go party with them at night. It was a tight knit community that was really cool to be a part of. If there is anyone to blame for the likes of Shaun, it is ourselves. We grew up, got married, had kids, forced our infants to watch scream of conciousness, flat planet, black box, maybe even creatures of habit while they chewed cheerios in the highchair. We thought Shaun at age 8 in I forget what movie throwing front flips was the coolest thing ever. All the while, we got real jobs and made real money and threw it at the sport, turning into a real business. Shaun may not have grown into the Craig Kelly or Bryan Iguchi we may have hoped for, but he has thrived in the world we created for him. We were all the misfits back in the day, so who are we to judge now? Anyway, the small days of snowboarding are behind us; it is the big business we turned it into. The good news is that a good powder day is still a good powder day and we can always go riding instead of watching a contest with a spinning tomato.

looks like you got some panties in a bunch on that one haha. Great read and really good points. Oh yea to all the people that suck shauns dick how old are you? where do you come from? cuz i remember when he was just a kid maybe 11 or 12 years old and watched his rise to power if you must. now aftre seeing what roads he has taken and decisions that were made fuck that dude. he has never done anything for snowboarding ever. I actually saw that pipe in silverton and poached the hell out of it for one lap. so if that day walking ginger sees this thanks for your perfect private pipe that lap was fun. didn’t even hit the left wall just surfed the right all the way down. hahahahahahha

  95. Davschall says:

Ok first off all caps guy..with a name like radboarder ya lost me. To everyone saying “he is the best rider” or “one of the best riders” I laugh so hard. I watched him two years ago at the winter xgames attempt to compete in Slopestyle and it was an absolute joke, he didnt even make it near the finals, so best rider…try no, best pipe rider most probably. But when your tricks are so scientifically crafted and scrutinized, you’re not riding anymore, you’re performing a gymnastics routine. Dont get me wrong, Im a rail rider, ive been in a super pipe once at snowmass and got freaked out when i got a foot out of the pipe, and said never again. So i have mad respect for anyone who rides pipe, but theres this one detail, what was it…oh yeah halfpipes are made out of fucking ice, the one thing that snowboarders avoid at all costs. Also my only issue with burton is they manufacture boards on an assembly line, but I dont blame them that much..because they are filling a need, I dont expect Neversummer to supply the next generation of new riders because they couldnt fill that market. Also burton does things like the lift ticket program or whatever with their boards so thats pretty cool,.I mean i havent read the fine print but it looks like if you buy a board you get a free lift ticket, I mean talk about giving back.

Well back to shaun white, Idk if he will ever give back to the snowboarding community, to me he hasnt, I mean hes the face of snowboarding, but he seems a bit overblown, I mean giving him a perfect score in the pipe is a bit ridiculous. Hell if I was him that would feel almost like a let down, I mean you should be striving your whole life to be perfect not just handed it. Also those costumes (ie whatever the fuck his line of outerwear) I mean wtf, sure he’s the face of snowboarding but to me he looks like a lap dog, maybe thats just his personaliity, but then..come on lol. Idk I dont know the kid, saw him once at breck blew right by me not givin a fuck, just snaked me. I see torstein all the time at keystone, and he waits his turn, once my friend even accidentally snaked him, and he was cool with it. But i digress I dont know the kid and maybe hes under a lot of pressure to perform, sure hes lining his pockets, but hell for all I know maybe he wants a time to ride by himself, get back to the roots, doubt it but who knows, I dont and I doubt anyone commenting does. Do I like the kid not really, do i think hes the reason every like kid wants to shred like so many people here seem to think, hell no. Thats all I really have to say about that.

Also those ripping on supernatural. One it was awesome, a great idea, great time. Two so it was televised only, so what. It was in canada in the middle of nowhere-ish (i mean its canada so i can only assume) Also clearly youve never been to the xgames, cause well they suck in person your feet are constantly cold, and you get to see like one trick if you watch the hill, luckily they have tv screens, hell when im there i usually just cruise around aspen.

I do agree with you one one point radboarder (and trust me its not your name) Snowboarding is becoming so commercialized and mainstream, it certainly isnt the sport is was even 10-12 years ago, and to fight back and say that its still some underground movement, is ignorance. But your also wrong, for some people snowboarding is an identity, its a lifestyle, I mean Ive ridden with this kid, Eric Willet, cool kid, he lives on 5 grand a month (still a good chunk to just snowboard) and hes in the xgames! Also his little brother, super good rider too, dropped his sponsors to focus more on snowboarding, hell I started on a Riva board at a little hill in minnesota called Welch Village, and snowboarding got me through my teenagehood. So I wouldnt say its now longer an identity just not so much for everyone and obviously everyone grows up, but when it comes to snowboarding, I dont think i ever will.

Ps yes this is a wall of text so I dont really care if no one reads it, Ill probably forget about it in a day anyway lol. I have to add one more thing (I know right “just shut up already), Last movie I saw shaun white in was “I ride park city” and it was god awful just like a minute of nothing cool. Also I think that people need to realize those people that are filming arent necessarily there for their enjoyment, they are there to get paid because its a job. So dont get all bleeding heart “its for the love of it and us!!!” Hell i attempt to get away from a camera as much as possible and just ride. Literally anyone who films me I say, “You arent going to get the shot if you cant keep up.”

  96. Rybo says:

What the hell does Shaun White owe anyone?.. isn’t snowboarding a free expression and source of joy we all benefit from.? he gives back by showing up and killing it, for all our enjoyment ,, in spite of all the judgement of haters, and under pressures most people could never understand…. ,, powder to the people. if you don’t like it turn it off and go riding.

  97. endlessryde09 says:

I think Shaun is as much of a turd burglar as the next guy, but I can’t agree with everything being stated against him here. In “giving back” what would you do? Can you honestly say if you were winning contests and getting endorsements you would give it away to snowboarding? I’d like to think I’d be generous enough to service the greater good and try to make something cool for everyone to enjoy, but who doesn’t day dream of a lambo every now and then? I’d probably say screw all of you I’m buying a cabin somewhere none of you can get to, a back hoe, and a few sleds, build my own ultra natural course and say sorry no friends on powder days suckers.

I’m not holding it against him. Could he leverage his sponsors to support cooler events in his name like T.Rice? Maybe, but he’s the puppet not the master, he conformed to corporate design not creating it on his own terms. Travis is iconic because he broke the mold, it’s not totally fair to to blame a guy who has been paraded around since he was 10. His name is on the Beijing Air and style, arguably bringing a form of snowboarding he most relates to to a country currently experiencing massive growth in snowboard participation, so he is raising awareness and growth of the sport in emerging markets, which is good for snowboarding (regardless of whether he just signs a contract to slap a vector image of his face on the posters and collects a check or not). He is on hand at Northstar to shake hands and kiss babies as part of his contract, and is credited with them getting a 22 foot halfpipe at the resort last year. Was a hefty chunk of change probably involved? most likely, but don’t hate a guy for having an agent. He just brought a world class competition spec halfpipe to a popular west coast resort that is open to the public. I don’t like pipe and would rather see a junk park or some more tree runs, but that’s my preference, That halfpipe is a lot harder and more costly to maintain, and just because average humans might not make use of it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t count as a contribution.

Shaun filmed an entire video back in the day, The Shaun White Album, and mostly got hated on for it. He teamed up with Shaun Farmer and tried to shred some AK lines in First Descent, and got hated on for it. Would you keep putting shit out that wasn’t earning you money or showing your weakness as a rider in different disciplines if no one appreciated it? He grew up in SoCal and jocks parks, T.Rice grew up in Jackson and slays everything, we aren’t as hyper critical of other riders who aren’t as well versed, Shaun just focuses on what he’s good at and cashes in.

My issue with him is more in his portrayal of snowboarding to the masses, which he is more a product of than a cause . Big Media portrays snowboarding as some corny drama of contest runs and temper tantrums and calculation. Sure it’s there in some form, but snowboarding is more about the connection with the outdoors, exploring, and building relationships. Private facilities, a lack of collaboration with piers, and a constant drive to be the only guy on top paints a bad picture that doesn’t represent who I am or what I think snowboarding should stand for. Furthermore, it creates the idea for up and comers that it’s acceptable to treat snowboarding this way, as a sport you just train for, and when those kids get older and don’t turn pro or start getting free shit, they fall off and the sport dies out. (see: current state of the industry). The industry needs more people telling the story of camaraderie and creative expression, and Shaun is the proverbial poster child for competition and robotic repetition, granted he is the most highly skilled and calculated athletes on the planet (in a u ditch).

Fully on board with criticism of whoring out his brand name to scooters and targets and most of the rest of what was argued.

  98. Helgi says:

    Well said!

  99. Derek Betcher says:

The comment about copying Kooley’s L1 pant is pretty funny. I started snowboarding 4 years ago and was psyched on Shaun’s pants as I wear skinny jeans day to day. Seeing his Burton “Kooley ripoffs” made me go searching for skinny snowboard pants at Active where I came across the Kooley pant. I would have never known this pant existed if it wasn’t for Shaun, and now I have a pair of Kooleys, a pair of Thunders, and a pair of the new skinny jeans from L1. They’re my favorite outerwear brand in snowboarding.

  100. Koji says:

Agree a little, but the scary reality is we live in a capitalistic society and everyone is out to line their pockets. I’m not defending nor agreeing but welcome to the fucking planet of get mine! I wish people cared about giving back or trying to make a movement where they can but when it boils down to it no one cares. I bet there are ample of things each of us could think about that we could give back . He definitely has worked hard and yes other riders out there are way more real people. But if you want to pick a bone pick one with true idiots that are wrecking the world, Miley, Karl rove, Ted Cruz, only in a world this self centered can we be bothered with how Shaun white hasn’t done enough for snowboarding. What about the fucking world. The Poor, developing nations, there’s more to worry about and maybe doesn’t deserve the hatred I read from most of the people who have commented.

  101. Spencer says:

He’s not really part of the snowboarding community IMO. I feel like if someone did a quad cork or something in the pipe he would be pissed, any other pro rider would probably tip their cap and want to buy the homie a beer. I also don’t think he’s very smart. T-Rice has had more of an impact to most younger people (at least in Southern California) since almost everyone I know has seen “Art of Flight”.

    Great article.

  102. jim ready says:

He’s a sore loser and he does nothing for skateboarding either. It’s not Hatred it’s ” Disappointment “.

  103. KG says:

We all love the sport we are passionate about…right? Think back to when you made your first turns, landed your first Method, watched your first vid and how stoked you were. I can remember back in 98 when I was riding @ Whistler w/ my pals and this little kid sat down beside us in the park…it happen to be this little red headed kid named Shaun White…wow was he good. So good that with a ton of riding and the support of sponsors was able to bring soooo much recognition to the sport we all love so much!!! Rice, Lynn, Line and so many others made a huge impact on all of us that are more into the “core” of the sport but without the impact of the bigger scene…X-Games and the Olympics (the biggest stage in sports) would we have the facilities we have today. Heck…we still can’t make turns legally at a few resorts…that’s total discrimination…right? I wait all summer for God’s greatest creation to cover the mountains and make the most beautiful white that we have all ever seen and I’m stoked for us all that we have professional snowboarders, whether they be from a more core representation or more mainstream and in front of the world, that bring so much interest and recognition to “standing sideways” rather than having to wear hard boots and clicking in…sorry to all the “core kids” for the reference to Burton but it’s the big dogs that keep the world in the know and keep the “groms” coming back for more. Hope to see you on the mountain soon.

  104. SW says:

All of you can go suck it……I’ve worked my ass off to get where I’m at, what the fuck have you done?

  105. Boarddaily says:

RADBOARDER!!!! Yes! Finally someone speaks the truth.

  106. Jacek says:

Shaun White is Shaun White and that is his style. He is the best halfpipe snowboarder ever and maybe the best snowboard athlete ever. He is making out of it and that is good. Sports career is short. He contributed a lot to the snowboarding (double cork in pipe, back to back double, double Mctwist etc..) Is pushing the sport forward. Snowboarding allows everybody to have its own style and Shaun White has Shaun White style so if you like it admire it, if you don’ t take it easy :-). I admire every innovative snowboarder..

  107. gary gar gar says:

He could give back by setting up an orphanage for wayward children in between his stance?

  108. Brian Foley says:

More like a load of Jealousy from within the snow boarding community, grow up and act like sportsmen not some jerk who cannot stand anyone else getting the lime light.

  109. thatguy says:

why isn’t kp mentioned?! that fool had everything it took to beat that machine. white is crazy and has an unmistakable appearance and skill that helped snowboarding. if he sold out, soo be it. if someone was pushing a fat check in my face telling me to chew their gum or drink their drink.. id do it. i would give back forsurrrre tho! that’s what makes him look like an arshole.. and i don’t blame the public for agreeing. just like the kp doc i saw, it showed his true side from fellow friends. he is a very competitive person and he makes more money that way. that equals greed and losing yourself and the actual love you had for the sport. its verry sad really. the more tricky and unpredictable techniques come from boarders who aren’t on a regime of landing a single trick perfectly. you learn more that way. tony hawk sold out and i think realized what he was missing all those years.. once he stopped being competitive.

  110. RainbowRider says:

Truth! He’s nothing but an asshole.

  111. Jonini says:

  113. John Blaze says:

Angry snowboarder that was quite the article. You sir are nothing but a bitch. Quit your bitching. Shaun has done plenty for snowboarding. Your gonna complain because this is his profession and he’s making a shitload of money doing it. Just because your beloved “best” snowboarders didn’t have it as we’ll doesn’t mean you have to be such a, I’ll say it again, BITCH. Lets see some footy of you shredding. Lets see you give something to snowboarding. Besides a bunch of words, talk, bullshit. Last time I checked blogging or whatever you call your gay ass articles has nothing to do with snowboarding. Its people like you that make this sport look bad. Bringing negative attention and energy to snowboarding. Fuckin poser

  114. Bilbo says:

AWWW HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE

  115. Do I need to point out yet again that I didn’t write this? I know emotions are running rampant and beating out the logical part of your brain which helps with reading comprehension, but someone should probably look at the author box.

  116. Ian says:

Winning the hearts of people on a macro scale while ignoring what is on a micro scale is the ideology of corruption.

Here is a list of things Shaun could do that, in return, I would respect him forever:

-Have a signature High Cascade session

-Start a scholarship fund for snowboarders who want to further their education

-Start a scholarship for talented young snowboarders who can’t afford to travel

-Move to a place where snowboarders actually live

-Give credit to deserving but unacknowledged riders

-Completely remove mask and goggles in an interview (this probably wouldn’t be enough for me to respect him forever, but it’s a start)

These are just a few ideas. After this coming olympics, I doubt we will see much of Shaun. Maybe one or two more x-games’. If I were him, I would want to retire from snowboarding on good terms, not for it to be the hole for his dick that it is.

  117. Connor says:

You make good points as well as pretty immature points. Using the Super natural as an example of giving back is vague and questionable. While I would rather watch the Super Natural any day, that is not to say that POW is the only way one can give back in snowboarding. Whose to say that halfpipe, slope, or urban riding doesn’t count as giving back? He now handles the air and style contest. Thats giving back…

Now your point about Target and stealing business from real shops, totally. There are two sides to everything. Realism and Surrealism. Would it be awesome if he sold to legit shops.. of course. Is that how it works.. no. And thats a product of how our country works. Shaun grew up without a lot of money and our capitalist way rewards those who are hungriest, not most humble. I really wish that wasn’t how it is.. but it is.

And lets just forget the point you made about the pants. Grow up, its a look that many companies have tried to rip ALL trying to bank in on kids who want to look cool before being able to move properly.

  118. Packy Fancher says:

Sounds jealous. You know what’s “lamer” than Shaun White? Writing articles crying about Shaun White. Get a life.

If you really dislike someone ignore them, I bet this article sold 5-10 burton boards, 3 pairs of oakleys, and 4 cases of redbull, and three boxes of kitty litter from Target. There’s a buncha douche bags “ruining” skateboarding but you don’t see me writing my dissertation on it. Grow up and focus on your own fun.

  119. Matt dunne says:

We all can agree shaun is a fucking faggot. But your argument fucking sucked dick everything you said was so fucking stupid that you should honestly become a skier you idiot. As a REAL snowboarder he is a douchebag because hes not a real snowboarder. All legit snowboarders are buddies and he avoids everyone. Look at frends crew, The hcsc crew, underdawgs, yawgoons. They are all different style of riders but all have mad respect for eachother unlike white. Travis rice is a fantastic snowboarder but isnt very respectable because he does not really give back at all, ya he makes movies to give himself millions. So you my friend are a fucking idiot and need to quit snowboarding.

  120. MIke says:

First off, it’s douche bags like the author that lack any real vision for the sport of snowboarding. Instead of writing a decent article on your opinion (and yours alone) you have to drop F bombs every other sentence because in your mind it looks cool. The only thing you accomplish is 1. making yourself sound like an ass, and 2. proving what a lot of people think of snowboards (thugs and inarticulate asses).

the sport of snowboarding is in decline because everybody in the industry and on the slopes seems to think it’s cool to act like asses. Snowboard manufactures by into this and design and market clothing with phrases such as “Spray Skiers” and design boards with drawings of naked girls or girls in bikini’s. Then they price them at 550.00 dollars which is way out of the price range of the 14 year old’s their obviously marketing them to.

The demographic of snowboards has gotten older but the industry refuses to recognize this, they insist on designing and marketing themselves to the 14-18 year olds and so far, they are coming up short. Snowboarders need to embrace an older demographic, stop acting like assholes on the mountain, especially to those who ski, and stop whining about the Shaun White and what he allegedly hasn’t done for the sport to make you happy.

Travis Rice has made millions off of Red Bull and every other manufacturer that pays and you think that he’s “giving back”? GMAFB dude. Yeah, let’s go into the backcountry and cut down a couple thousand trees to make my own park is certainly a great way of giving back. Then we’ll charge people up the ass to register to compete in this competition. But he’s giving back in your narrow minded point of view.

Shaun White is the best because he works at it. He trains harder than you and is more gifted than you. He’s made millions by winning, and winning everything. So drop your middle school F bombed laced rant, and act like a grown up. Stop proving to everyone else that snowboarders are a bunch of douche bags bent on keeping a great sport underground. The only thing that mindset will accomplish is a faster decline of a sport already in a tailspin. Until then, douche bags like this author should never be allowed to even think of themselves as representing snowboarding, all they do is give the rest of us who just want to have fun, a bad image.

  121. justin says:

sean white is a douche!!!!!! and so is this guy ^

  122. Jackie says:

Did someone mention the Frends crew? Looks like there’s both sides to that story, although Shaun’s side seems to be the more believable one: http://www.newschoolers.com/ns/forums/readthread/thread_id/772800/

  123. shawn white says:

    I’m a faggot

  124. Matilda says:

I don’t know exactly what you mean by saying that Shaun White doesn’t give back to the sport, but I do know that he gives 8 percent of his income to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis. Looks like a lot better use of his money to me.

  125. Power Ballz says:

I bet he has a massive dong.
