Salomon Drift Magnum a closer look

By Angrysnowboarder @angrysnowboard · On January 16, 2009

With a quiver of Salomon boards sitting there at my disposal I decided to snag this puppy. First I have to say that I loved the graphic, its part Power Slave and part horribly 1930’s mummy movies. Props on the graphic. Now onward into my review.

Board: Salomon Drift Magnum
Size:162
Bindings: K2 Formulas
Stance: 22.5ish I say ish cause there were some on the fly adjustments. (Mainly me screaming and kicking the bindings till they went outward more)
Angles: 18 negative 15
Boots: K2 T1 DB
My Weight: 168
Resort: Keystone
Conditions: Whiteout conditions coming in, snow puking down.
Mindset: Damn there’s no Gondola its going to be cold
Tunes: I’d like to say Powerslave but no it was Guns and Roses

Preconceived Notions: I didn’t like equalizer on the Official, this board is the highest end they make maybe it’ll be better. Was informed by a buddy that he felt it was too soft.

Flex: Playful between the feet stiff everywhere else.

Stability: It’s a pretty damp ride.

Ollies/Pop: There was no life to this thing it just felt dead.

Butterability: The flex negated this I tried it didn’t happen so I said fuck it.

Cruising: Its stable while flat basing, but on edge that’s a different story. I found that the first kink would engage fine but the second kink in the equalizer would cause me to grip weird and give me a washy feeling. I wasn’t impressed yet again with Equilizer sidecut.

Jibbing: Didn’t happen

Rider in Mind: Someone that likes hard charging. The sidecut though would make hard carving a bitch in my opinion.

Personal Thoughts: Another board that’s not for me. I felt that while it had a lot of great technology it just didn’t ride as well as it could have.

i read the Drift is just a new name for the discontinued Prospect (basically Wolle’s old model)…if so, I’m glad I didn’t get the Prospect (was interested about a year ago). I know Salomon makes quality durable products, but their board designs have some funkyness – either way too soft or way too stiff for me or whatever

I don’t get why you’re riding a 162length board when you weigh 168 pounds. That’s way too big unless you’re only doing some gnarly powder slashes, and this board sure ain’t for powder. Maybe this is why you were struggling to pop.

Yep thats right I can’t ride that board at all, not like I jibbed on a 163 Legacy all last season or anything. Guess little guys that used to be huge can’t ride boards over a 155.

The fact that you were jibbing on an all-mountain board shows your lack of knowledge about what you should be riding. I'm guessing your "jibbing" is 50-50ing a gnarly ride-on. Try riding a board that's meant for you and shut up.

Heaven forbid I do half cab frontside board slide, bs nose slide change up, nose press 180 out, tail press gap to tail tap, yep I can't jib.

Shut the fuck up you stupid fucking wanker the category is all mountain, the park constitutes being part of the mountain. Don't get so butt hurt cause I ride more days, better mountains, and harder than you.

P.S. tell your mom she still owes me 50 bucks for last night.

    it’s a great board,
but no wonder it felt like dead for you
why did you ride the wide version of it?
wide boards always feel like dead
it’s just fckin stupid to ride the 162 magnum, it has a waist of 263, no way you can jib on this one

I love wide boards they never feel dead and the extra surface area is great for landing. Think before you post.

Is that all you really have? I understand Aurora is the fucking mecca of weekend warrior snowboarders and all but come on that’s just a weak attempt to try and bait me. Come on buddy put some serious thought into this.
