What do you get when you take originality rip it off, shove some of the most marketable riders to core snowboarding at the forefront of a copied idea, and then sprinkle in some technology for good measure? Well that my friends is the Switch Dice app from the newest binding company on the market Switchback Bindings. But how is this new app a rip off you say?
Well if you follow this site you know that we interviewed Ted Bendixson creator of the Snow Dice app. What is Snow Dice? Well basically it’s the originator of apps that let you play games of snow against yourself or friends and try different tricks. So what is Switch Dice? Well other than the animation it’s the blatant rip off of Snow Dice. Have to love unoriginality on the part of the developers for this.
So what’s so wrong with this. Well you’re talking ripped off intellectual properties, but more importantly you have one app that was innovative and pushing creativity and its utilitarianism and then you have an app backed by a few pros pushing it out for free as a self marketing tool for themselves without bringing anything to the table. Competition breeds innovation look at Microsoft and Apple or even the auto manufacturing market. Now when you drop an app that doesn’t do this to compete with the app that was already successful to a certain degree all you’re doing is adding complacency to the market. Cool you have pros that back it but other than that what does it add?
The long and short of this is that Snow Dice actually offers more than Switch Dice. More tricks, video tips, and the such. The downside is that it’s not a personal promotion tool for the Helgasons and other riders plus they didn’t add on to what Snow Dice had already started. Then again when you chuck money at a developer and say copy this so we can promote ourselves why would they try to one up it? Both apps are out there and with smartphones being the norm hopefully you choose the better app that actually will help you be the better snowboarder and not buy into the hype. Props to Ted and crew for keeping it real and being the originators not the imitators like Switch Dice.
