Nitro Sub Zero with Wiigs a closer look

Last year it was the limited release Sub Pop that was turning peoples heads. Well this year they changed the name, gave it a more pink graphic, and kept it the same. Here’s a look at a deck I’ve ridden before that’s virtually unchanged.

Board: Nitro Sub Zero

Size: 152

Camber Option: Gullwing camber. Camber under the inserts reverse between.

Bindings: Raiden Wiigs

Stance: 22.5

Angles: 18 negative 15

Boots: K2 T1 DB size 10

My Weight: 165

Resort: Loveland

Conditions: Sunny Blue skies

Preconceived Notions: Has anything changed between this and the Sub Pop?

Flex: Jibstick

Stability: This board is unique in it’s flex pattern that when you charge with it, it’s not super soft and noodly, but when you go to pop or jib with it you notice the flex.

Ollies/Pop: Could be better it’s not a super poppy board.

Butterability: Bend this board in half and have some fun getting jibby.

Cruising: Edge to edge you can rail a turn and it’ll lay over and drive through turns really well.

Jibbing: Flexes a shit ton but you can press the crap out of this mind.

Rider in Mind: Urban/park jib kid.

Personal Thoughts: Unique ride but something that should be beefed up a tad more so you can ride it as a jib all mountain deck.

What They Say: AN EARLY RELEASE OF OUR NEXT YEAR’S LINE WAS THE SUP ZERO. IT TOOK YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING TO BUILD A BOARD THAT CAN TAKE YOUR RAIL RIDING TO THE NEXT LEVEL. WE DEVELOPED THE GULLWING CAMBER THAT MAKES YOUR TECHNICAL STREET RIDING EASIER. IT DOES THIS BY RELIEVING PRESSURE FROM THE CONTACT POINTS SO ALL THE CONTROL IS RIGHT BETWEEN YOUR FEET AND STILL PROVIDES SOLID OLLIE POWER WITHOUT A SOGGY FEEL. WE HAVE ALSO ADDED OUR DRIFTER BASE THAT SLIGHTLY RAISES THE EDGES AWAY FROM THE SNOW RIGHT BETWEEN YOUR FEET TO MAKE IT EASIER TO GET THROUGH KINKS WITHOUT RAIL DAMAGE. THIS BOARD WILL ALLOW YOU TO BREAK THROUGH TO A NEVER SEEN BEFORE LEVEL OF RIDING.

Binding Compatibility: Probably a little over powering for this deck

Binding Adjustability: It’s got all the fun on the fly adjustments a lot of the other brands have.

Straps: Toe strap needs some work to fully lock into the toe of a boot compared to what else is on the market, heel strap is on par thought.

Highbacks: Did their job nothing special here.

Binding Flex: Slightly stiffer flex putting it more in the all mountain category and out of the all mountain freestyle category.

Ratchets: Yep that’s what they are, don’t think they’re the best I’ve ever used.

Rider in Mind: Was Andreas Wiig but he jumped ship to Forum so who knows anymore.

Personal Thoughts: Yep it’s a binding it does what bindings do but these aren’t anything I’m overly enthusiastic about.

What They Say: ANDREAS does it all from contests to filming, descents and rails. His style of riding demands a binding that provides a very stable platform. This is why he chose our Precision fit base for his new binding. We enhanced this binding by adding the RAD airbag for dampening and the NEW response high back for performance. This binding is solid just like Andreas.

Angry, love the site, good work.

Can this be ridden as an all mountain freestyle board or is it only good in the park?
Does gullwing camber get good float in pow? Or not realy that much?

  2. Al says:

ps. Does gullwing feel a bit “catchy” buttering??? (as compared to a 3 stage rocker like the Rome artifact rocker? How would you compare this board to the artifact rocker?

  3. Al I wouldn’t ride the Sub Zero all mountain that’s for sure I’d bump up to the Team Gullwing or go with the 0 camber Swindle instead. All boards have a slight catch to them this is no exception but the soft flex and drifter base let you manipulate it a bit.
