Gary our resident backcountry enthusiast is back again testing out something so small and simple you wouldn’t think it matters but it does. This time up on the chopping block is the Karakoram K Clips used to tighten the seal in the split down the middle of the board. Here’s what he had to say.
Product: Karakoram Splitboard (K) Clips
Purpose: To provide a more solid connection for your splitboard and eliminate slop.
Fit: They are made to fit with the existing inserts for Voile Chinese hooks. So it’s relatively easy to swap them out, if not a little time consuming.
Features: K Clips are clips that lock your board together. Unlike the Chinese hooks that just interlock with no camming action.
Conditions: Powder, corn snow, and extremely high winds.
Pros: They lock your board together. Another piece of the puzzle that will make your split feel more like a solid ride.
Cons: They do not slide together like the Voile Chinese hooks do. It is a bit harder to get your board halves put back together with these. These also only work with splitboards that have flat inside edge sidewalls. So they do not work with Voile cap construction splitboards. K Clips should be fine with all other splitboards on the market or a do it yourself model.
Durability: They appear to be very well made and durable. They do use a cam action, much like a ski boot buckle. So it is possible they will wear out over time. I’ll have to revisit how well they are holding up after next season.
Personal Thoughts: I’ve been pretty excited over the Karakoram system. The main reason I haven’t gotten in is the price. $600 for an interface system when I already have an interface that works. For $50 the K Clips looked like a cost effective way to improve the performance of my splitboard. It was money well spent. The K Clips lock your board together. It takes a bit to get used to locking them in. It’s not as easy as the Voile interface. It’s not much harder either. I was able to do this on one of the most blustery days I’ve had this past season. Once they are locked down the board transition becomes much easier. In fact I would say that they actually sped up the process for me. For the ride down, it was a very noticeable difference. The board felt very solid and tight. They also have no effect on skinning. If you are looking in a big improvement for your downhill performance on your split, these are a great, affordable way to go.
What They Say: Karakoram Splitboard Clips optimize the performance of your splitboard. They firmly secure the splitboard halves together, eliminating slop in the seam. Say goodbye to tip and tail rattling forever – your splitboard will ride as a normal snowboard in all conditions. Welcome to the splitboard revolution!
