What is snowboarding? Can anyone answer that and fully encompass what snowboarding truthfully is? It’s such an open ended question that it leaves multiple interpretations towards it’s meaning. For some it could be an occasional weekend trip, for others it’s a way of life that gives us the utmost joy.
Here we sit going into another Olympic year with the mainstream media putting a center stage on snowboarding once again. Is the image the Olympics depicts through these media outlets what we want people to believe snowboarding is? Is this spotlight truthfully healthy towards everything we depict snowboarding as?
You can’t deny the significance the Olympics have on any sport that it showcases, especially one that’s more in tune with a younger crowd. It’s almost guaranteed that after this winters games we’ll have a spike in participants going into the 2011 season. Of that spike, how many of them are going to only take it up so they can go ride park. It’s that whole park/pipe riding image that the Olympics, Dew Tour, Grand Prix, and all those other contests that get covered by the mass media that make me ponder this question.
On one hand it’s great for snowboarding seeing as we peaked some time back in the early 2000’s as far as participation goes, but on the other it doesn’t full encapsulate that feeling of togetherness you have when you’re out there on the slopes riding hard with friends, having fun, and learning new tricks or riding new terrain.
Somewhere along the lines things went from the days of instantly having connections and being friends to having coaches and taking a fun time activity/lifestyle to being super serious. Is their a need to be this serious about snowboarding? Fuck no! It should never be taken serious after all, we’re just gliding down hill over top some snow at break-neck speeds.
What’s the point of all this? What’s the point of anything other than to spread an idea or opinion. This is what this rant is, it’s a way to get more people to stop with the seriousness, take a breath, and realize we’re in it to have fun. Fun is the ultimate definition of what snowboarding is. We’re all part of a community that’s based on fun and recreation which should merit more in society than it does. So next time you’re on the slopes look around take in everything and realize snowboarding is fun and what you make of it, nothing more and nothing less. Don’t let the marketing fool you.
