It’s so funny with all the advances we’ve had with alternate camber in the last 4 seasons that there’s still this contingent of people that are so Neolithic in their thinking that they believe it’s cheating. Looking at snowboarding and how far our gear has come in the last thirty years one has to ask how the hell could anything be cheating? After all aren’t we part of the counter culture revolution that tried to say we wouldn’t be limited by what was expected of us or constrained by what was given to us? For those that deem us as cheaters here is an open letter to you and your kind.
If you’re one of the people that feels riding something that isn’t traditional camber is cheating I’d like to address this to you. Yes, you! You know who you are, we see you sitting there talking shit about our gear, saying how our presses don’t count, or that anyone could butter the fuck out of that deck due to it being bent the wrong way.
We fully understand that you once rode a (insert first generation alternate camber deck here) and further more know how all forms of alternate camber ride cause you’re the self proclaimed expert of all things in the realm of snowboard technology. Yes that’s cool you once heard from a friend of a friend that they once saw a dude eat shit trying to jump the smallest booter in the park and come up short due to his board being unable to take the landing. Further more we also understand the philosophy of if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
Sure camber has been here since the beginning it’s like that old friend you go to the bar with when you venture back to your hometown and catch up on things, well at least it’s that way for us. We have to wonder with your inability to accept change and to mock us for enjoying it if you never actually left home so seeing something new and exotic scares you. It’s OK though we fully understand that fear we were once like you too.
Now we have to ask you since we’re the cheaters for embracing the new technology what your thoughts are on high backs, actual snowboard boots, and highly functional outerwear? Or is it safe to assume you’re on route to becoming the first generation of snowboarding Amish and shirking the conveniences of what technology has to offer? Perhaps you’ll even take it to the ultimate extreme and bring back riding garage made snowboards made out of vertically laminated wood and rubber straps for bindings. No, you wouldn’t do that would you? Hell in fact you enjoy your awesome snowboard boots and outerwear and why would anyone get rid of a binding without a high back since it provides heel sided support. Well then my fellow rider if you’re saying you love these advancements we have to ask you why must you hate on our choice?
Oh but wait what’s that, you think we’re just going to the ultimate extreme now to say that because you use these advancements you yourself could be considered a cheater? Well yes you could interpret it that way or you could look at it through our eyes. You see we don’t see you as a cheater for using these technologies we see you as our fellow rider or even a brother/sister that was able to progress due to these advancements. After all where would we be if we didn’t have this technology at our disposal? Why yes we would have stagnated and things would have remained as they were with those that were passionate hiking golf courses.
Now hopefully you understand while you haven’t jumped on the supposed bandwagon we have. Say what you will but we know what we like and that’s why we’re riding it. You like what you like and we respect that. So just like the saying goes different strokes for different folks, we have respect for where our technology has come from and embrace where it’s going. You should drop the jokes or comments about how we can’t do what you can do on a cambered board or that we’re cheating because low and behold we probably can do what you do, we just don’t need to flaunt it in everyone’s face.
The whole reason this letter exists is due to the amount of people with the old-school mentality that I run into on a daily basis. Yes I won’t deny I’m a full 100% alternate camber rider it fits my style, I’ll hop on camber from time to time and can ride it fine but it’s not my thing anymore. Just thought it was funny the other day hearing a guy at Keystone tell his buddy that it’s a fad and we should all just kill ourselves for riding it.
