Gaper Day Fun
As the end of March draws near we mountain folk start to get ready for one of the greatest holidays known to us. It is a Festivus for the rest of us. A celebration that the spring is slowly emerging and the mountains are almost tourist free. It is a day unlike any other day.
This is a day to celebrate all the great out dated pieces of fashion, stupid questions, and general lack of common sense that tourists present to us. To understand what a Gaper is you need to look at the classic definition: One who lacks common sense, uses rental or outdated gear, has a gap between their goggles and hat, and is oblivious to their surroundings. For this we have dedicated a day entirely to you.
The start of gaper day goes back to some time in the past when neons had suddenly become out dated. I believe it was probably in the 90′s during the Clinton administration. It seems that a bunch of under paid, under appreciated, over worked seasonal employees decided it was a good idea to dress up and act like the people they have to baby sit all season. But the only way to do this act properly is to be highly intoxicated as it made their horrible pieces of ski fashion look that much better and gave them the same lack of common sense as the very people they had to supervise. While some resorts ( Vail Resorts) have tried to deter this celebration many others have fully embraced it. After all it’s sliding on snow on pieces of wood and plastic, how serious can you really take it?
There’s a belief that Gaper Day is actually a day to gang up and hunt down true Gapers. This is not the case because, one you need these people to come here and spend lots of money so you have a mountain to ride on, 2 you’re a douche if you think this is true, 3 everyone was a gaper at some point in their life.
Here’s a great video of the Rules of Gaper Day, complete with Kenny Logins. Because lets be honest we need more Logins.
