Burton Sherlock Used and Reviewed
Burton added this board to their line this year and the hype started building about what it was. Now it’s review season and this thing was sitting there right in front of me. Touted as a board that can handle anything a manly man could throw at it I decided to put it through the ringer.
Board: Burton Sherlock
Size: 154
Camber Option: Flying V so reverse camber between the feet going out to a micro cambered zone under foot into a bit of rise in the tips.
Bindings: Cartel EST
Stance: 22.5
Angles: 18 negative 15 goofry
Boots: K2 T1 DB size 10
My Weight: 165
Resort: Loveland Ski Area
Conditions: Sunny blue skies
Preconceived Notions: All I heard was this thing was a do it all board that could slay the park and shred the mountain.
Flex: Softer in the tips stiffening up towards the center with a bit of torsional give.
Stability: Insanely stable at speeds and on edge from the inserts. The tips had a little bit of flutter which could be attributed to the Flying-V. Damp but not dead is the best way to describe this.
Ollies/Pop: Insanely poppy to the point its one of the best ollieing boards I’ve been on for this season. You could just load it and snap sky high.
Butterability: Real playful and easy to mess around with on the tips.
Cruising: Rolling the board on edge came with ease that’s not present in a lot of the decks I’ve ridden. When railing hard turns it gripped insanely well and held through both hard tight carves and long drawn out ones.
Jibbing: Presses were real easy due to the flex in the tips and locked in real well.
Rider in Mind: The guy going from parks to pow that wants a deck he can shred the whole mountain on and not worry about it lacking.
Personal Thoughts: This board was a pleasant surprise to ride and really shocked me at how awesome it was when popping off things or railing turns. I’d highly recommend this for anyone that wants a deck that could be a true quiver of one.
What They Say: Over the next ridge, tucked between two chutes you’ll find it—a terrain anomaly that perfectly sends you, no shovel required. Set it down, keep your speed, slash that wave, then tuck into the trees in search of log slides and pillows. If this is your “park,” then the NEW Sherlock is your board. Combining the best of rocker and camber, freestyle and freeride, it’s a shock absorbing, all-natural jib and jump machine that floats like a dream

is the shape (tip and tail length) noticeably different. This and the gnu dirty pillow claim a tweaked shape that allows good pow float with a twin.

It had like a more elliptical shape of the nose but nothing super crazy drastic, the rise might have been a bit more which would explain the fact it flapped at speeds.
Addendum for you talked to the rep today after riding the Custom and Sweet Talker with Flying V it has a longer camber profile giving it a different ride.
When I put this board side by side with the custom flying V at the dealer my initial impression that the Sherlock feels too flexible and the custom flying v is a more ideal choice. However on the snow is what matters. Great to read your input.
I would also like to read your input on EST/ICS binding system in general. Do you think it is advantageous to traditional plate bindings? Does the board feel more dynamic under foot?
This board sounds awesome, possible replacement for my several years old Custom. I’ve been trying to figure out whether I should get a better board for charging or something more playful. This solves my problem because it is better in both ways.
The question is, with this board in their lineup now, where does that leave the Custom amd Custom V Rocker??
Top Review.
Weekend I hate EST/ICS 1 I do not trust it at all seen it shift too many times to ever be fully confident on it. 2. The dead spot isn’t under foot but on the outside of the boot right on the flex point due to how the bindings are made.
Reedy all I’m going to say since the Custom Flying V review is coming is Fuck that piece of shit Sherlock> Custom.
Angry, I’m curious how you would compare the Sherlock vs last year’s Joystick that you seemed extremely favorable about. These seem to be your two favorites of the Burton line the past two years. Which one would you prefer most?
Man that’s a tough one I’d probably go Sherlock if I was riding more pow/trees and Joystick for more park days.
Hey All,
Just giving my 5 cents on the Sherlock. Last year I rode the Joystick (awesome board). This year I decided to try the Sherlock. Rode it last week.. Conditions where some pow (8 inches) in some parts and about an inch or two in other parts. The board was awesome in pow and handled well in the groomers. Blitzer asked about Sherlock vs Joystick. Very hard choice, they are both great boards. I would say the Joystick is slightly more playful than the Sherlock as the rocker at the front and back is a little higher then on the Sherlock but the Sherlock does not fall behind, it’s still playful. The Sherlock probably has a little better edge grip but the Joystick handled well last year when I rode it. I agree with Angry, maybe lean towards Sherlock on Pow and Joystick for more park days. Either way, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with either board. As far as ICS, I haven’t had any issues with the bindings moving. I like that it’s pretty easy to switch your settings. As far as feeling more dynamic underfoot, I don’t think I can feel a big difference but I like the fact that I can move the bindings fairly quickly if I need to make a change on the mountain. I hope this feedback helps a little…
Hey guys, I’m a camber rider/carver who likes some speed & wanted to try a more playful board w/o going to a soft, washed out V rocker… This board sounds like a good one for all mountain. Can the stance be centered a bit by shifting the bindings up a bit?
Infinite channel system think about that one and what you can do with stance options.
Well here’s to hoping there’s a sherlock left in Proform. If not, I’m goign to have to pick a camber board, Custom or Supermodel. I wanted a ‘play stick’, but no biggie. I can get a Vrocker next year from pro form if not this year.
Sherlock board best board feeling ever…i came from a CustomX….never want to switch again,
Okey u loose a bit speed and grip on really icy days..but u got so many things back in return!!
Sherlock Rocks ATM \o/
Hope this helped a bit
Hi Angry.
How’s the steering underfoot on the Sherlock compared to the 09/10 Joystick. Are they similar or is one better than the other?
It’s more like a NS grips a bit better and has more snap through a carve.
I got one on proform earlier this year because I have the hero from last year and it’s just to washy but I wanted something for my everyday riding that was playful and rocker but not a noodle. All I can say is I love that thing! Aside from when I’m getting ready for a boardercross I haven’t pulled any of my other sticks out yet. I fell in love with that thing in the first three runs and haven’t looked back since.
I was curious if you’ve tried any of the squeezebox editions of the Custom yet?
As for the channel I’m a huge fan It’s a pretty proven technology and I haven’t seen mine move on any of my channel boards or on my wakeboard. I’ve taken some serious hits on the wakeboard and never had one move.
I need to get on a squeezebox Custom that’s like the one thing I haven’t done yet but it’s so late in the season I’ll just wait till I’m on next seasons stuff in January.
What would you say about Sherlock vs. NS Revolver/Evo
Just a different ride.
According to specs, Sherlock seems to be almost the same board as Custom Flying-V. Still you despised that board and seem to love this. Care to elaborate, what are the main differences?
It’s not the same by any means. Longer nose, longer camber zones, smaller reverse camber zone, shorter effective edge all on the Sherlock.
If you only playing around on the jumps along the sides of the pist. Would you choose the Sherlock or the 2011 Joystick?
Sherlock
What binding would you prefer on the Sherlock, Cartel EST or Mission EST? Is it any diffrent with either one or is it almost the same?
Cartel EST.
Hi, I am debating between a 157 sherlock and 159 park pickle for all mountain. i am about 5-10 and 190lbs. do these two board even compare?
Thanks
Never ridden the Pickle but the Sherlock is a solid choice for all mountain.
