The Custom has been a staple of the Burton line for probably as long as you’ve been snowboarding. So what can be said about the Flying V version of this board? Is it still the true quiver of one deck or has it become something else?
Board: Burton Custom Flying V
Camber Option: Flying V: reverse between the feet camber under foot.
Bindings: Burton Malavita EST
Angles: 18 negative 15 goofy
Boots: K2 T1 DB size 10
My Weight: 165
Conditions: Sunny blue skies with a few clouds, early morning groomers.
Preconceived Notions: The Custom has been a staple in the Burton line for a long time but in that time from its inception it’s drastically changed. Every year you never really know what you’re going to get with this thing.
Flex: Past mid flex with slightly stiffer tips and a good bit of torsional stiffness. Over all it’s more designed for charging.
Stability: For the flex pattern I honestly didn’t find this thing all too stable. The reverse camber in the center of the board made it feel like you were balancing on a fruit bowl.
Ollies/Pop: Nothing super spectacular here just your average kind of pop.
Butterability: Well if you’re lazy you could lean back and call it a butter but ollieing into various ground presses just didn’t make this thing stand out as a great butter stick.
Cruising: Edge to edge initiation was slow and the grip was lacking. On deep hard carves it didn’t grip well at all and would wash out when flexing the board through the arc of the carve.
Jibbing: Nothing spectacular at all, pushing into presses took a bit more effort.
Rider in Mind: Someone that’s mindless brainwashed by Burton and believes this board is a true quiver killer.
Personal Thoughts: This thing was a fucking pile of shit. It didn’t grip well one edge, pop was mediocre, off jumps it was blah. Over all just a huge let down. Talking with the rep he informed me that the profile was a lot different than that of the Sherlock. Honestly it had too much reverse camber.
What They Say: Driven by the peak to park domination of Mads Jonsson, the NEW Custom Flying V ™ revolutionizes all-mountain performance by strategically combining the overall radness of rocker with the snappy suspension and power of camber under each foot. Add in the all-wheel drive grip ofFrostbite Edges and the mind-reading response ofLightning Bolts and the Custom™ is ready to change the game, yet again.
