Video Grass: Why You Should See It

Posted by Angrysnowboarder On October - 28 - 2009

When it comes to shred flicks everyone has something they want to see and get from it. Much like the fit of a boot, what people want is highly varying. This movie had a lot of hype behind it coming in to this season. So why should you spend 40 plus minutes of your time viewing this flick?

Well for starters three things that would make anyone want to see a movie like this. LNP shits himself after slamming on a rail, Deer carcass jibbing, and Desire Melancon getting a dogs balls put on her head. Seriously who wouldn’t want to see those three things? OK, still skeptical I see.

Here’s the basic gist of this movie. It’s more of a skate style inspired flick with lots of  jibbing and creativity put into the actual obstacles used. Sprinkle in a mix of a backcountry and lifestyle shots with an appreciation for various genres of music and that’s what this movie has. Don’t expect double corks and cable cams, instead think more attainable jib set ups.

Now who has the bangers in this movie? Well each rider that has a full segment brings something to the table that is unique and shows their talents. Obviously everyone is expecting LNP to be the show stealer and carry this movie. His part is great and shouldn’t be over looked but there are some other heavies that deserve to be mentioned. The opener from Ben Bilocq kills it and for myself has become my favorite part in the whole movie. The way he dominates the urban scene with his riding is amazing. Obviously Bittner and Bennee crush it with their smooth style and unique eye for features. Slam of the year goes to Alex Cantin for impaling himself on a bike rack (same bike rack pictures on the cover of the DVD box).

Now much like other movies there is a bit of reused locations in this film. Notably will be a few features from Minnesota that some people might remember from No Correct Way. There’s also a grip load of shots from Quebexico as well, but that’s a given with the line up of tight pants wearing gypsy’s from that area.

Is this movie for everyone? Well if you want to watch people making big pow slashes on shit you’ll probably never ride then no it’s not. But if you want a movie that reminds you of shredding with friends check it out. This movie has had a high rotation in my DVD player for the last month due to how inspiring it is.

Just the hype on it had me skeptical. I’m just not down with hype cause most shit that’s hyped up turns into poop.

  5. Joe Said,

I bought Cool Story and Videograss at the same time, and they’re both totally worth the money. Videograss does have a lot of urban stuff, but even LNP hits a couple back country booters. Hell even the first segment from Jake Blilonq (sorry if i got his name wrong) has a lot of back country stuff, so I have to disagree with you saying its all 100% urban. Cool story also has a lot of rails, but its got a lot of back country stuff too, like 50/50. Cool story has got a different feel, I like the first part where Ben Bogart admits he only makes 500 a month, and struggles to pay his bills. It made me feel good about being a struggling board bum. The overall feel is a bunch of friends who are all broke trying to make a movie, but having a great time, like when they all go to AK and crash Jesse Burtner’s parents house with pretty much no money. There are some stand out parts too, like when Austin Hironaka 50/50′s a steel cable for a good fifty, sixty feet. All in all if you buy one or the other they won’t dissapoint.
