686 Smarty Cargo Pant Used and Reviewed

By Angrysnowboarder @angrysnowboard · On November 12, 2011

There’s not much you can’t say about 686 they’ve been in the outerwear game for a long time. The Smarty line represents their devotion to technical advancement in outerwear by integrating an internal removable liner and offering functional features. Here’s what I had to say about it.

P: Brent LaFleur

Garment: 686 Smarty Cargo Pant

Resort: A Basin and Keystone

Conditions: Sunny bluebird to overcast skies with light snow falling.

Size: Large

Fit: Relaxed baggy fit but with the option of Long or Short which adds/subtracts 2 inches from the inseam.

Waterproofing/Breathability: 15,000mm/10,000gm

Stitching: Double reinforced stitching in all the pertinent areas with single over lapped seams in non stressed areas.

Pockets: Two front zip, on rear Velcro, two Velcro cargo pockets, one zip pocket on the right leg, hidden left leg pocket look for the red stitching, and one belt loop pocket.

Zippers: Super smooth and fluid without hanging up on any of the cover flaps.

Venting: Traditional inner leg venting that runs almost up to the center of the crotch.

Special/Hidden Features: Right front pocket has a micro pocket with a goggle sham in it, hidden leg pocket on the left leg, belt hoop micro pocket, zip out internal liner that doubles as sweat pants, and 3 snap hoops sewn in below the waist that allow you to attach a 686 jackets powder skirt.

Rider in Mind: Someone that likes a relaxed fit pant that they can sag but also layer up under. The beauty of the three length options is tall guys and midgets don’t have to sweat these things not fitting them.

Personal Thoughts: These pants are a heavy warm pant designed for almost all elements. I wouldn’t rock them in the spring/summer riding as they’d be a bit too heavy but for prime winter conditions I’d strongly recommend them. 686 has enduring quality in my opinion and I wouldn’t hesitate recommending them to someone that wants solid bang for the buck.

What They Say: Smarty is 686’s most popular and established collection, setting the standard for the outerwear industry. Smarty offers three levels of performance – 20K, 15K and 10K, each of which features the world-renowned SMARTY technology de- tachable lining system. With SMARTY, you have the option to wear the liner for extra insulation and warmth on the hill or by itself for when you’re chilling indoors.
