Binding Model: Salomon Quantum
Binding Size: Medium
Stance and Angles: Goofy, 21in wide, 12/-6
Board Used: Niche Theme 157
Boot Used: Ride Fuse
Boot Size: 8
Rider Weight: 155lbs
Conditions: Late season after a good storm.
Binding Adjustability: The straps are on tool less bolt sliders. Loosen and move the strap up or down the adjuster and tighten back down. The highback rotation and forward lean are on the same bolt in the frame. Slide the bolts forward for less forward lean, and back for more.
Straps: The toe strap shape does conform well over the toe box, but with the shape I couldn’t truly crank it down. I had it tight enough not to cause any slipping or anything, but if you’re a cranker you’ll get pressure around your pinky toe. The ankle strap is a little more deconstructed than the rest of the line, but still stiff, supportive, and comfortable.
Ratchets: They release and pop easy and ratchet down smooth.
Highbacks: The carbon highback is very stiff and responsive. It has a very cupped shape that very much hugs the boot heel.
Binding Flex: This is the stiffest of the Shadow Fit line. Despite the carbon back most of the support still comes from the frame. The carbon back does offer a little bit more response and stiffness but not drastically so. It still provides a measure of movement on top of the board.
Ride: More of a premium feel underfoot, but still with a surfier intent. The carbon back is stiff and responsive and the straps are comfy.
Rider in Mind: All mountain freerider charging with a surf inspired style.
Personal Thoughts: Honestly this binding has never really made sense to me. The idea of Shadow Fit is to provide a softer more surf inspired feel. Carbon is used to create a very stiff and responsive ride. That to me is two opposites and the way it all works with the soft heelcup and how high it rides high on the highback I just haven’t ever felt like the carbon does much to really increase the edge to edge response. The Defender feels to me just as responsive.
