2018 Ride Warpig Snowboard Review

By Angrysnowboarder @angrysnowboard · On February 10, 2018

Board: Ride Warpig

Size: Small 148

Camber Option: Tapered Directional Rocker. Rocker in the nose and tail while flat between the feet.

Bindings: K2 Indy

Stance: 21.5 Wide 18 Negative 15 Goofy

Boots: K2 Thraxis Size 10

My Weight: 177lbs

Resort: Arapahoe Basin

Conditions: Overcast skies, some snow falling with fresh snow on the ground, snow mixing from blower pow to chunder, and a bit of wind and fog.

Flex: With a flex that’s playful yet responsive sits the Warpig. You get a lot of play in the nose as the rocker zone is bigger than in the tail, while it stiffens up under the insert packs, and then has a lot of play between the feet.

Stability: With the wider platform you do gain some stability. This board isn’t overly damp which makes it lively and fun. I will say that in heavy wet snow it did get bucked around just a bit when really charging.

Ollies: This board has a lot of snap. Load it up and just boost type of snap. It turns sidehits, rollers, and natural features into super obstacles. The snap is what differentiates this board from certain other short and fat decks out there.

Pop On Jumps: This board can send a jump. I overshot what The Basin calls jumps with ease while having no speed. Load it up and snap, or come in fast and just pop.

Butterability: Having rocker in the nose really lets you play around and do what you need to do when buttering into pow. The smaller rocker in the tail isn’t a slouch at allowing you to butter either. By and large just butter your heart out with this deck.

Jibbing: This board can press and slide with the best of them. Don’t fear the fattness of this little piggy as it locks into presses and slides.

Carving: Ripping turns this board has you covered, slashing pow and pushing through chunder, no problem. Basically if you want to rip it go for it.

Rider in Mind: Someone that wants a short fat little deck they can rip around on during Warpig Wednesday.

Personal Thoughts: The trend to the shorter, wider, more versatile deck is a good thing. The Warpig has pop while still being playful. I found this board was great in a series of variable conditions and did what it needed to do. I did hook up a few times in the trees but I attribute that more to it being 40 degrees after getting a half foot of snow than the board itself.

Comparable Boards: Marhar Lumberjack, K2 Party Platter, Yes 20/20

Weird question but if you were to pick one would take the war pig or the sushi for a volume shifted board? I’m 6’2 230 lbs with a size 12 boot. I’m definitely your “huskier” rider.

    Hi Angry,

Can I get your wisdom to assist my next badboy purchase?

I’ve narrowed a long and painful search down to two boards – the Warpig or the Spring Break Slush Slasher.

I was thinking either Warpig in Medium

Or Slasher in 147 or 151

    I’m 5’10, 190-200lbs, boot size 9

    Advanced intermediate rider.

Just looking for a fun board to play with down the mountain, try and lay some deep rail carves, hit some natural kickers on the way down. Pretty much just have a blast on!

I have a DOA and Moutain Twin as my other boards. Been riding 7-14 days a year for about about 20years

Are these two very similar? Which is more fun, or maybe which is more ‘forgiving’ ?

Thanks man – keep it angry

Slasher will be softer, the Warpig will over lap your DOA and Mountain Twin albeit with a volume shift. I say go Slush Slasher just be prepared to lose that tail so if you’re hitting sidehits a bunch you won’t have it there for landing. Probably do the 51 just to give you more support.

51 will give you more surface area and edge hold, 48 will be easier to throw around and fit your weight better.

    Hey Angry,

Thanks for your review. I’m having a hard time trying to find combination of boots and board that fits me (6’3, 200 lbs size 14 boots). The warpig may be the solution for me.

Would you recommend the 158 or 154 ?

Is is a good board for beginner (my 1st board)?

    Thanks

It’ll work for a first board. You’ll have a bit of a learning curve. But if you’re really worried about it being too domineering and because you have such a big foot I’d say look at the Nidecker Merc. Their wide versions of the Merc can fit up to a 16 boot and won’t have such a crazy learning curve.

But i love trees. Im wondering if i should just size down to a smaller warpig, its such a great do it all board. or pick up another board specifically for tight trees.

    Hi guys,

I appreciate your help with my queries.

I have had a look around and I have found a deal good deal on the Union STR but in doing so I also found a deal on 2019 Now Brigades ~$150. I am coming from 2014 Now IPOs and I love Now tech so was wondering which would be a better fit for the Warpig; main focus will be piste charging/carving, pow and messing around off piste. Very little park.

I’m torn between this board, yes typo, never summer proto type, I ride a head space and absolutely love it but want a slightly more all mtn quiver. Any recommendations that’s similar to the head space only better in pow and high speed stability? I mostly ride park but with age and hurt body parts Ive been riding more all mtn.

None of what you have suggested, probably go with a Riders Choice since it’ll be stiffer, still asym, and have a damp feel like your Headspace.

    Hey Angry,

Really appreciate everything you’re doing here. Having a hard time deciding between a Warpig and a Capita Mercury. I know they’re pretty different boards, but basically I’m looking for something that’s agile with good float in trees, but can still rip down icy blacks. with a little freestyle sprinkled in. (Side hits and butters). The Mercury is more similar to my NS Heritage which I mostly like. But the shortness of the Warpig sounds fun. Any thoughts?

Hello, I’m 6 ft 190 lbs and have a 10.5 boot. Was wondering if I should get the 154 or the 151. I like a little bit of park, mainly jumps and a little bit of jibs and messing around in the trees as well. I also like doing some deep carves. Not sure if this is relevant but I have a 157 twinpig and the width on it feels pretty good, just a little long length wise.

    • Angrysnowboarder says: June 16, 2020 at 9:09 am

Here’s the issue with the Malavita, there’s a tiny wing on the back of the heel that creates a pressure point when you twist flex a board. If you over torque that board it’s going to dig into the top which has next to nothing on it and push in. This COULD (stress that) cause it to push into the topsheet and crack the board. I’d say it’s better to bump up to the Cartel.

Great site, great reviews. Lets call my skills a fresh intermediate that mainly likes finding every natural bump/features, trees, small pow stashes on my way down. Dabble a bit in the park, but currently suck at park riding, would like to improve a small bit, but not where my main focus is. If that makes sense? Im too old to be jibbing non stop and shite like that. In the future I would like to just take a few laps through there and not look like a complete loser.

Im slightly confused by the US boot sizes.
My feet are around 28cm long, which makes the Eu size 44-45.
The boots that I have bought were marked as Ride Anthem in size 12 on the website but that has to be a mistake1? Eu 44 would make US 10,5 or sth. Maybe it were women-sizes even tho that wasnt mentioned.
However. Would that change sth? I am hyping myself up for the capita mercury, because I want a snowboard that is stable a high speeds as all my friends are on skis. Or is the Ride Warpig in 54 actually better for hish speed?

I think I have bought 10 or 10,5 then. Was a weird store. Would the Capita Mercury work for that?
Why is the Superpig better? Because I want to a stable board at speed? The good Ride didn’t like the board, but I wouldn’t pay to much attention to their reviews tho.
Could the Jones Frontier (in 159 or 161W) for 335€ or the Ride Berzerker (160W) for 233€ be rational options also?

Anyhow the decision might have been made as I read the ride has no top sheet and it gets damaged easily? And some people have bindings there press into the base?

What bindings might that be? If you also heard this. i have malavitas at the moment, version 2018

I’m guessing the party mod will be a more “normal” snowboard with a top sheet

Are you reviewing the new party mod at some point?

If the bindings are pressing into the base they’re clearly mounting the board wrong. More than likely it’s the screws pushing through the inserts because they’re using too long of a screw or Hulking them too tight.

Can you give a recommendation for sizing on this board? I’m 6’4 220. Kinda in between, I’m guessing 154 would be more freestyle/all mtn and 158 would be more all my/pow?

Thanks for always being quick to reply. I own a slush slasher and a capita doa I’m kind of on the fence between picking up an orca/warpig, or just going left field with a mind expander. Any thoughts on if one would have less overlap than another. I mostly ride timberline in pnw (pow, trees, sidehits) but hit bridger bowl last year for a week and had 2+ ft of fresh snow and it was way to much for the slasher. Also would the the mind expander handle any sort of drops in pow?

The Mind Expander is designed for riding deep pow and everything that’s associated with it. Where it lacks a bit though is if you hit a big drop and land backseat heavy, it’s soft and wheelies out from it not always allowing you to recover in time. It’s also not the best for pushing through that Cascade Concrete you have up there at Tline, this is where the Ultra Mind Expander would be better. Now with that said going with the Orca makes more sense over the Warpig, it’s a damper ride, has better edge hold, and is more suited to that PNW concrete.

Sounds good I’m sure this year is gunna be hard to get on decent pow days with the reservation systems in place so kinda leaning towards the orca, 156?

Sounds good. Wouldn’t sweat the reservation system if you’re smart with it and know how to utilize it to your advantage.

    Hey Angrysnowboarder!

I love the reviews and your honesty. So, I pulled the trigger and bought the 2021 Ride Warpig size XL. I am a little concerned, I am 6 ft., 230 lbs, and size 10.5 boot. I barely have my toe side on the edge, it may be exactly even (heel side is fine). I cannot adjust my Burton Cartels anymore center. Should I down size to the Large even though my weight does not fit their suggested chart? I want to go by theirs but want the most out of the board. Any suggestions would be awesome.

    Thank you, Stephen

hey Angrysnowboarder. I wanted to get as small of a warpig as possible (I ride all piste mostly and like miniparks more than bowls but will do everything over the course of a season) but have 10.5 boots / burton L bindings. would the XS be too narrow/small for me to get the warpig experience out of it?

    Hey!
I’m going to get a new board this season, after riding a too big forum holy moly for too long I used to live in the park, now I go there from time to time, do some rails and jumps when I can. But I mostly ride groomers and hit every roller and side hit possible and try to trick and link them carve and go fast. We get massive snowdumps so I also want something for pow. I’m looking at several options: warpig at 151 or 148, party platter at similar length or a super pig. (Party wave is not really available where I live) I’m 183cm high, and weigh in at 74kg. Any tips or pointers you would like to share?

The short version; I want a fun board that can go fast, be good in pow and be able to land switch in the park

Unless you’re doing crazy amount of switch riding you probably just want a Superpig.

i wonder if you think its a good structure, and if so should i never wax the warpig?

    Thanks!
