Board: United Shapes Orbit
Camber Option: Camber with a lifted nose. Traditional camber insert pack to insert pack and a lifted (rockered) nose.
Bindings: K2 Lien AT
Stance: 21.5 Wide 18 Negative 15 Goofy
Boots: K2 Thraxis Size 10
My Weight: 177lbs
Resort: Arapahoe Basin
Conditions: Overcast skies, warmer temps, sometimes it would snow dipping dots, and the snow was slush to frozen depending where you were on the mountain with everything in between.
Flex: Softer tip and tail with a stiffer mid section. There was also an abundance of torsional give. It was very much an all mountain deck with a bit more emphasis on the playful side of the spectrum.
Stability: Riding through variable terrain like I did really put this board through its paces. What I got out of it was that this board could survive a chunder field of doom with your knees only taking a minimal hit.
Ollies/Pop: The tail has a lot of snap in it. I found that when I would really load it up I was boosting further than I thought I was going to. This made it great for launching off side hits and popping rollers. Taking it through the park to hit some jumps it didn’t falter either.
Butterability: Tail butters were playful, nose butters I had to leverage it a bit more just due to the shape. Over all though, this thing can butter if you know what you’re doing.
Carving: The flex coupled with the sidecut really lets you drive this board through aggressive carves. I found myself just ripping long S turns down the groomers and then heading into the banked slalom style turns on the side of the run constantly.
Rider in Mind: Someone that wants something different than a popsicle shaped deck that can carve and still be playful.
Personal Thoughts: I haven’t ridden a United Shapes deck before, but after watching the Warp Wave crew it seems I understand what they’re going for with this. I could constantly rip turns and still play on sidehits even with its directional shape. Overall this isn’t a board for everyone, but if you’re a purveyor of fun or someone that wants to win a banked slalom this might be the deck for you.
