2017 Rome Gang Plank Snowboard Review

By Kevin Hub · On July 7, 2016

Board: Rome Gang Plank

Size: 152

Camber Option: Freepop Rocker. Flat between the feet with rocker outside the insert packs.

Bindings: Flux DS

Stance: 21 Wide 9 Negative 9 Goofy

Boots: DC Lynx 8.5

My Weight: 155lbs

Resort: A-Basin

Conditions: Post late season dump. Chundery and bumpy shit snow.

Flex: Just below a mid flex on the park spectrum. Stiffening up just a bit in the tips while still playful in the middle.

Stability: You’ve got the bamboo rods in the tips to keep them in check so if you just watch your feet it’s pretty solid. You are still going to feel just about everything that’s happening underneath you but it’s still pretty controllable through the chunder.

Ollies: Bamboo rods in the tips provide some great skate snap. If you really load it up and drive the snap out and you’re more likely to end up in the back seat. I never was left wanting for more which is great when you’re hitting side hits or playing around in the park.

Pop On Jumps: Soaks up a lip pretty good and has some solid landing gear. The Bamboo Hotrods snap off a lip great and the board has the right amount of stiffness so if you land off edge you balance fine.

Butterability: Being a little softer with the flat rocker the boards got spread. Bend it, twist it, press it… spread that buttery love.

Jibbing: One of the nice things about the way bamboo snaps is it never over snaps. This lets you get away with pushing a little too much into the tips without getting pushed out. So the if you do happen to miss the pretty sizeable lock spot you can still manage to stay pressed in. Locks into a boardslide great and slides through a kink like a fat kid down a slip-n-slide.

Carving: A little softer torsionally but the QuickRip sidecut helps keep your edge engaged. You probably wont be throwing down Euro trenches but quick snappy turns and long drawn out ones are no problem.

Rider in Mind: All around park rider and the guy skating the whole mountain.

Personal Thoughts: It’s not quite beefy enough to be a 50/50 jumps/rails deck, but for the guy looking for a ride everything park board that favors jibs and butters just a little more than jumps and drops it’s a great option. Lively and super predictable. It just felt like I had already been on the board for months.

Check out the past reviews of the 2016 and 2015 Gang Plank.

Comparable Boards: Yes Public, Arbor Draft, Ride Kink

    Hi,

Really appreciate your work here it’s the bible of snowboarding gear.

I recently bought a Rome Gangplank based on your review here as spring was here and I wanted a softer park deck. I found that it really felt a lot different than my Endeavor KTV and actually liked it a lot more for the quicker turning and carving wasn’t actually too bad once I got used to it. In that regard your review is spot on – it can’t handle euro carves really but is a nice quick and agile board.

My problem was on jumps, I just couldn’t get this thing to pop much at all. Probably boosting less than half as much as the Endeavor KTV.

Is this normal? You mention the board has pretty good pop. Have I got my technique wrong? A dud board? Or does the relatively to the Endeavor sound about right?

The KTV has a different carbon layout. If you look at that and how it’s laid out compared to the Gangplank that’s where the snap comes from.

Would you have any reccomendations for a board somewhere in the middle of the two?

I found the KTV too stiff to butter around on, maybe I got it in a size too large maybe. Also I had a lot of fun on the gang plank with its quick turning and agility.

Really noticed the urethane or whatever it is sidewalls on the KTV too which means you can charge in it a bit and I’ve got bad knees so it helps a lot for me.

        Thanks

Seamless sidewalls are great. If you’re looking for something in between why not downsize on a Rome Mod Rocker?

Would appreciate your thoughts on the Gang Plank vs the Artifact Rocker – I can currently get a good deal on either, but the Artifact is about $50 cheaper.

I’m 6ft, 170lbs with size 11.5 boots (Burton, so should be a smaller footprint, but I’m not convinced), so I’m looking at either the 157w Gang Plank or the 155w Artifact. I want something that’s fun to play around on and butter (and have a Lib Tech T Rice for harder charging) but that isn’t so soft that it’s useless/scary outside of the park.

    Any help appreciated!

Both those boards are really interchangeable. You’re kind of describing the Gangplank though with what you’re asking of the board.

I’m riding a santa cruz fusion with traditional camber since ~10y. Only 5 – 10 days on the board each season, and try to hit some powder when possible. After trying my friends skate banana on a powder day recently i realised it’s time for upgrade.. I’m looking for a versatile, playful (skateboarding background, very limited park riding though) board which floats well on pow. There seems to be a vast choice of all mountain boards. I found a good deal on the 2017 Gang Plank 149 and a 2017 Agent Rocker 150. Despite having different types of profile they seem to be comparable according to reviews. Which of the two would you recommand? better for pow? or am i on the wrong track with both?
    I’m 168cm, 63kg (5″4′, 139lbs).
Thanks a lot for your help!

If you’re looking for a pow skateboard, you’re going the wrong way. Check out decks like the K2 87, K2 Party Platter, Marhar Lumberjack, Amplid Pillow Talk, and the like.

oh wow the Party Platter looks like tons of fun! Lumberjack seems rather big for me, i was tempted by the regent earlier but could not find any dealer in europe. so it’s no option anyway.
Just talked to a friend about board choice and we agreed that even powder is the best when we’re honest with ourselves there’s >50% of groomers..
do you think the PP will be fine as a do it all board?

ordered last years k2PP yesterday. in the end it was pp vs warpig; as i’m not riding too much i think i will be more comfortable with the little softer flex of the pp. and price was much more attractive 😉
thank you so much for your help!!

What would you recommend between 149 gangplank or 151 Rome crossrocket. Mostly ride groomers and like to get in between the trees when it snows a lil more. I’m 5’7 160 pounds. Thanks
