Binding Model: Now Recon
Binding Size: Medium
Stance and Angles: Goofy, 21in wide, 12/-6
Board Used: Niche Aether 156, Niche Theme 157, Flow Darwin 153
Boot Used: Ride Fuse
Boot Size: 8
Rider Weight: 155lbs
Location: Keystone, A-Basin
Conditions: Early spring no new snow at Keystone, spring pow dump at A-Basin
Binding Adjustability: The straps are all tool less bolts. You just flip the cover, unscrew, line up the hole you need, screw back in. Super simple and easy to use.
Straps: I’m on the lower end of the size with an 8 and the toe strap kind of showed that. I never had it blow off and it generally worked the way it was supposed to and never felt like it was ineffective, but the lower section of the toe strap tended to drift away from my boot. The ankle straps are a little on the softer side for what you normally find on a carbon highbacked binding, but I never felt like they weren’t enough.
Ratchets: Smooth on and off with plenty of crank power, I never had any issues.
Highbacks: It has a psuedo wing that really lets you drive hard into your contact points. You can finish a Euro carve off your back foot with tons of power. It’s a very stiff and unyielding flex.
Binding Flex: Stiffer overall but not unmovable. Maintains enough flex to get your weight around on the board without too much leg power.
Ride: Aggressive with just a touch of freestyle thrown in to keep it comfortable. The bushings and full length EVA provide a smooth ride with quick response and direct control.
Rider in Mind: Charger looking for a very solid feeling binding and wants the response of a carbon highback.
Personal Thoughts: The ankle strap being just a bit softer actually worked really well with the pseudo wing on the highback. If the straps had been much stiffer you wouldn’t be able to get away from the highback and the whole thing would feel too restrictive. It’s a really solid balance and makes for a really well done powder oriented freeride binding. Something you can put on your AK stick. The Recon is still on hangar 1.0 so it is still a little narrow in the heelcup.
