The Arbor Formula has been a multiple Best Good Platinum Wood Test Award Pick Beginner Board winner. After years of its dominance in this category its rein has come to an end for 2015.
Board: Arbor Formula
Camber Option: The System. A true center reverse camber.
Bindings: K2 Formula
Stance: 22.5 Wide 18 Negative 15 Goofy
Boots: K2 Thraxis Size 10
My Weight: 175lbs
Conditions: Grey skies, high winds, mix of no snow to puking heavy wet snow, firm and icy groomers.
Flex: Soft! This board is just progressively soft from the dead center out. This is what you would expect from a beginner board.
Stability: Throw the idea of stability out the window this board is so soft it flexes with every contour in the snow and feels every vibration. At speeds there is an abundance of chatter.
Ollies: The soft flex of this board doesn’t let it give a lot of snap. This means all the pop comes from you as a rider and not a characteristic of the board.
Pop On Jumps: The lip does all the work. Don’t expect this board to give you any added boost.
Butterability: Well reverse camber and a super soft flex really are the characteristics you want to make a board butter. This board excels as a butter stick.
Jibbing: If you’re on a budget and want a soft noodle this would make a great jib stick. The reverse camber and softer flex just let you get over the tips with ease. This board absorbs kinks without any issue.
Carving: Griptech does work for allowing the rider to steer under foot. If you’re a solid rider carving won’t be an issue as long as you don’t push it too hard. The softer flex can cause the board to wash out when really driving hard through a turn.
Rider in Mind: A first timer that’s just getting into snowboarding or someone that wants a really soft jib board.
Personal Thoughts: In years past this board rode a lot like the Draft but with a different overall shape. Well now it feels drastically softer than in years past. While great for a beginner its ability to help a rider progress past just learning to turn might be hindered as there isn’t any rebound or snap out of the deck.
